African Union head visits Central African Republic

(AP) ? The leader of the African Union, Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi, has proposed a government of national unity to resolve the rebel conflict in Central African Republic.

Boni Yayi arrived here Sunday to try to find a negotiated resolution to the country's crisis. The president of the African Union met with President Francois Bozize and then made an appeal to the rebels.

"I beg my rebellious brothers, I ask them to cease hostilities, to make peace with President (Francois) Bozize and the Central African people," said Boni Yayi at a press conference in Bangui, the capital. "If you stop fighting, you are helping to consolidate peace in Africa. African people do not deserve all this suffering. The African continent needs peace and not war."

Boni Yayi said that Bozize had pledged to have an open dialogue with the rebels with the goal of establishing a government of national unity, which would include representation from the rebels and the Bozize government.

Bozize also addressed the conference and said, although he plans to stay in power until his term ends in 2016, he is not against having the rebels enter a coalition government with him.

"We'll probably be able to set up a national unity government. I apologize to the suffering Central African people," said Bozize. "It is a message of peace to my brothers of Central African Republic, "said Bozize.

The African Union's leader arrived in Bangui when many feared there would be a fight over the capital, Bangui, a city of 600,000.

According to several families in Bangui, members of the Presidential Guard have kidnapped people suspected of supporting the rebels who have seized 10 cities in the country's north over the past three weeks.

A rebel spokesman, Col. Juma Narkoyo, warned Bozize: "We warn the head of state and his family to stop abducting our parents. They have nothing to do with it. If he wants to solve its problems, he comes to meet us on the ground. We expect firm feet. " H0e said that a dozen people have already been arrested in Bangui.

On his arrival in Bangui, Yayi Boni had a private meeting for more than two hours with Bozize in the VIP lounge of Mpoko airport, which is secured by French troops.

So far Boni Yayi has no meetings scheduled with rebels or with the democratic opposition.

Boni Yayi's diplomatic effort comes as France has deployed an additional 180 troops to protect its interests.

The French reinforcements arrived Sunday from nearby Gabon, bringing the total French military force in the capital, Bangui, to nearly 600, Col. Thierry Burkhard told The Associated Press Sunday. The troops are to protect French residents in the capital, which many fear will be attacked by the rebels.

As fears mounted that the rebels would attack Bangui, Bozize imposed a curfew from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m.

Bozize earlier appealed to France for help against the rebels, but French President Francois Hollande's government said it would only protect French interests and would not prop up the Bangui government.

As the rebels have made a rapid advance across the country's north, residents in the capital now fear the insurgents could attack at any time, despite assurances by rebel leaders that they are willing to engage in dialogue instead of attacking Bangui.

On Saturday the rebels seized the city of Sibut, 185 kilometers (114 miles) from Bangui.

Sibut, a key transportation hub, fell without a shot being fired because the Central African Republic army and forces from neighboring Chad had pulled back to Damara, 75 kilometers (46 miles) from Bangui on Friday, said Minister of Territorial Administration Josie Binoua.

Neighboring African countries have agreed to send more forces to support the Bozize government.

Representatives from the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States, or ECCAS, agreed at a meeting in Gabon Friday to send forces to CAR, but did not did not specify how many troops would be sent or how quickly the military assistance would arrive.

The ECCAS states, with more than 500 soldiers via their regional peacekeeping force in Central Africa, over the weekend warned the rebels to halt their advances.

"ECCAS forces are on high alert, and the city of Damara is the limit not to cross," said Antonio Di Garcia, the ECCAS representative in Bangui. He urged the government forces and the rebels to hold to their current positions and to begin dialogue.????????????

?The ongoing instability prompted the United States to evacuate about 40 people, including the U.S. ambassador, from Bangui on an U.S. Air Force plane bound for Kenya, said U.S. officials who insisted on anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the operation.

The United States has special forces troops in the country who are assisting in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the fugitive rebel leader of another rebel group known as the Lord's Resistance Army. The U.S. special forces remain in the country, the U.S. military's Africa Command said from its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

The evacuation of the U.S. diplomats came after criticism of how the U.S. handled diplomatic security before and during the attack on its consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in that attack.

French diplomats have remained in Bangui despite a violent demonstration outside its embassy last week. Dozens of protesters, angry at France's lack of help against rebel forces, threw rocks at the French Embassy in Bangui and stole a French flag.

This landlocked nation of 4.4 million people has suffered decades of army revolts, coups and rebellions since gaining independence in 1960 and remains one of the poorest countries in the world. The current president himself came to power nearly a decade ago in the wake of a rebellion in this resource-rich yet deeply poor country.

Bozize's government earlier reached out to longtime ally Chad, which pledged to send 2,000 troops to bolster Central African Republic's own forces.

The rebels behind the most recent instability signed a 2007 peace accord allowing them to join the regular army, but insurgent leaders say the deal wasn't fully implemented.

The rebels say they are fighting because of their "thirst for justice, for peace, for security and for economic development of the people of Central African Republic." The rebels also are demanding that the government make payments to ex-combatants.

Despite Central African Republic's wealth of gold, diamonds, timber and uranium, the government remains perpetually cash-strapped.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the violence and reiterated its demand that the armed groups "immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from captured cities and cease any further advance towards the city of Bangui."

The 15 Most Surreal Moments From 2012's Sports-Related Next Media Animation Videos

Next Media Animation, the Taiwanese animation company that produces short cartoons recapping the news of the day, has its best muse in sports, where the lines between good and evil lend themselves to pictures of angry video game characters, and events are just cartoonish enough to spark the overactive NMA imagination. It's a vision of what sportswriting once was: loose with the facts, endlessly biased, and happy to caricature villians and add fantastical unlikelihoods to its summaries. There's also the fact that some of the jokes are clearly lost in translation, CGI characters doing anything looks weird, and the good people at NMA are obviously a little insane. Nonetheless, this is more or less the way the year went down.

This year, NMA incorporated photoshops from Deadspin commenters into its recap of Pacquiao-Marquez?you guys are famous!?and with that overlap in mind, it seemed there were few better ways to relive the year in sports than taking a look back at the strangest moments?out of many, many options?from their summaries. Take it away, God playing with Tom Brady and Eli Manning action figures to decide Super Bowl XLVI, from "Super Bowl 2012: Manning clutch as Giants beats Patriots 21-17," and click through for more of the delightfully surreal NMA weirdness that will eventual end up replacing the actual events in our memories.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

FOX, Dec. 16, 1:25 p.m. ET

Once upon a time there was a commercial for a phone I?ll never buy, advertising a technological frill I?d never use, implying a spice-up-the-relationship trick that I would not recommend, that was nonetheless the sexiest thing I?d seen on TV in quite some time. I?m speaking, of course, of the ad in which a wife sends her husband off on a business trip with a racy video, beamed directly into his Samsung phone via X-ray technology or whatever, with the sly admonition, ?Probably shouldn?t watch it on the plane!?

Needless to say, this ad is silly. If there is anything we have learned from the travails of Hulk Hogan, it is that if a video of anyone doing anything sort of sexual exists on a Wi-Fi-enabled device, that video will somehow make its way to the Internet in the way that an air bubble trapped underwater will, eventually, make its way to the surface. This husband and loving father, who seems so cute and beardy and clueless, will, in the rush to make his plane, leave his phone in the cab. Nefarious elements will find the phone. Within days, his mother-in-law will be asked at book club: ?Was that your darling daughter I saw on YouPorn? ?

But it doesn?t matter. For in that moment, as the wife gives that little waggle of her eyebrows, the husband all at once realizes what she?s saying, and she gives a chipper wave and a ?Say bye to Daddy!?; they are the very picture of modern, technologically enhanced marital bliss. They are sexy and adorable. I would do anything to be like them (but I wouldn?t do that) (if by do that you mean buy a Samsung phone).

And then anyway, in the first quarter of Dec. 16?s early NFL games, Samsung ruined it by unveiling the ad?s follow-up?a shot-for-shot remake, like Gus Van Sant?s Psycho, with Santa and Mrs. Claus in place of the couple, and two elves in place of the kids. I love this ad even more than the previous one?not just because of general senior sex-positivity, but because it is so clearly the act of a company and an agency taking it juuuuuuust one step too far. It was such an obviously bad idea, but they did it anyway. The best thing about television in 2012 was that there were hundreds of channels, and they all had 525,600 minutes of airtime to fill this year, which means that just as there were times that everything went right, there were also plenty of chances for everything to go wrong.

FCC streamlines rules for aircraft broadband, promotes widespread in-flight WiFi

Image

The Federal Communications Commission adopted a Report and Order today that updated regulatory requirements needed to provide broadband services on aircraft. In short, the commission has designated Earth Stations Aboard Aircraft -- the broadband modules placed on the exterior of aircraft -- as a licensed application and established a set regulatory process for future providers. What this means is that airlines will be able to select FCC-approved systems, verify that systems don't interfere with aircraft instruments, and obtain FAA approval in about half the time it takes now. The new FCC guidelines should make it easier for smaller airlines to install WiFi on their jets, allowing them to catch up to legacy carriers with nearly fleetwide internet access. This news might also be a mixed blessing for frequent flyers, some of whom see flying as the last bastion of peace in an otherwise connected world.

Reduce Pain With Your 2013 New Year's Resolution | Advanced ...

Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans pledge to make New Year?s resolutions each year, and health-related goals consistently rank among the most popular. People make these resolutions to look or feel better in the coming year, but there are also significant long-term pain prevention benefits.

You might be surprised to learn that maintaining a proper weight and basic level of fitness is crucial to protect your spine and major joints from excessive strain, wear and tear.? In fact, people who are overweight are at greater risk for low back pain, sleep disorders, spinal disc pain and joint pain, due to added weight-related strain on the spine and joints such as the knees, hips and ankles. It makes sense if you think about it; more weight means more pressure and strain that can cause pain.?

?Losing weight is the best way to decrease obesity-related pain, but there are certainly other things to consider,? said Satvinder Dhesi, MD, a physician with Advanced Pain Management in Milwaukee. ?The ability to lose weight requires individuals to be both healthy and active. There are many elements that can help people reduce stress and become more active, including: physical therapy, interventional pain procedures, supportive shoes, walking assistance devices and even investing in a supportive mattress.?

Along with decreasing pain or one?s risk for long-term chronic pain, other weight loss benefits include:

  • By losing 5-10 percent of body weight, blood pressure is lowered and LDL (?bad?) cholesterol is reduced.
  • Lowering body weight can improve sleep apnea and other sleep problems.
  • 90 percent of all diabetes, 80 percent of heart disease and 60 percent of cancers are preventable with healthier lifestyles and normal body weight.

?We encourage everyone to choose healthier eating and exercise habits in the New Year,? said Dr. Dhesi. ?Weight loss is really the first step in an overall healthier life.?

So as you think about your New Year?s Resolutions this year, consider the pain reducing benefits of losing weight.

What are your resoultions for 2013? Tell us your thoughts!

A little Christmas Nutrition Reminder :-) | Pittsburgh Fitness

Post image for A little Christmas Nutrition Reminder :-)

In order to stay strong and healthy, bodies need a variety of lean protein, carbohydrates and ?good? fats. The hormones in your body are regulated by the foods you consume, and the correct ratio of carbohydrates, fat and protein are essential for burning fat and losing weight. To keep your blood sugars steady throughout the day, eat at least four small meals that incorporate the right proportion of ?fats, carbohydrates and fats.

?

A healthy and balanced diet does not mean you have to give up your favorite foods. Use portion control and limit the occasions you consume foods higher in saturated fat or calories.? The right combination of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats is an essential part of maintaining a healthy weight and building muscles:

?

Protein:?

?

Protein is essential after a vigorous workout.? It rebuilds muscle; protein is the building material for muscle tissue.? Protein aids in repairing and rebuilding muscle tissue that is broken down during strenuous exercise. Aim for 40% of your daily calories from lean protein sources.? To get the results you desire, eat protein with every meal.

?

Load up on lean protein sources such as steak, chicken, nuts, egg whites, salmon or other seafood, and lentils.? Try to put the majority of your lean protein sources into a lower fat content protein than lower grade beef or pork. The consumption of an excess of foods with high saturated fat content is a contributing factor of elevated cholesterol and heart disease.

?

?

Carbohydrates:

?

Carbohydrates should make up 30% of your daily calorie intake.? Healthy carbohydrates include whole grains, oats, brown rice, fruits, vegetables and beans.? Avoid over-processed, high-glycemic foods such as sugars.

?

Fats:

?

Fat should make up 30% of your daily calorie consumption.? Fat is essential, just consume small amounts of healthy fats.? Unsaturated, or ?healthy? fats help keep cholesterol levels in an optimal range.? Healthy fats include olives, pure fish oil, avocados, fish, peanut butter and nuts. ?Avoid saturated and trans fats.

?

Along with a well-rounded diet, you need physical activity.? Fitness is important to any weight loss or maintenance goals.? Consistent exercise gives you more energy, endurance and strength.? It makes your health better and muscles stronger.

?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourage strength training, including core training, at two sessions per week.? Strength training strengthens your muscles and bones.? Recommendations include 150 minutes each week of moderate intensity activities such as jogging, bike riding or CrossFit. CrossFit delivers a strength and conditioning program for people of all ages developed to improve fitness levels.

(AP) ? Authorities say a man who gunned down two firefighters after luring them to his neighborhood by setting fires had attracted little attention since he got out of prison in the 1990s for killing his grandmother.

Police say 62-year-old William Spengler took shots at police before committing suicide on Monday as several homes burned.

Authorities used an armored vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario.

Besides the two firefighters who died, two others have been hospitalized and an off-duty officer who was passing by was injured.

Spengler served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old paternal grandmother to death with a hammer in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened. He was paroled in 1998.

Allegiant Travel Company Announces the Intention to Acquire Up to ...

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Allegiant Travel Company (Nasdaq:ALGT) today announced its intention to purchase up to nine used A320 aircraft. The average age of these aircraft at delivery is expected to be 12 years with a configuration of 177 seats.?The aircraft have been most recently operated by Iberia.

"The A320 aircraft type is a perfect complement to the smaller A319 and will enable us to continue cost effective growth for years to come," said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant President.?"These transactions represent a tremendous opportunity to purchase a sizeable fleet of sister-ships with CFM powered engines, the same engine type as our A319s, at very attractive prices.?Finding up to nine aircraft of this pedigree available for purchase is unusual in our experience.?Historically it has been difficult to find owners willing to sell quality assets at this point in their life cycle.?Our cash reserves and strong balance sheet continue to provide us a unique ability in the used aircraft space to move on these attractive opportunities."

"We do not expect a material change to our 2013 capacity as we will vary MD-80 utilization appropriately.?As with the earlier acquisition of A319s, we are committed to only acquire aircraft at values that support our existing business model of relatively low fleet utilization," concluded Levy.

Seven aircraft are expected to be purchased in 2013 and two in 2014.?With the addition of this transaction, Allegiant is now expecting 2013 total CAPEX to be between $270 and $280 million versus the previous guidance of $150 to $160 million.?The company expects to finance the purchase of these aircraft with debt.?Allegiant expects to place the first A320 into service late in the third quarter of 2013 and all nine aircraft are expected to be in service by the end of 2014.?No additional MD-80 retirements are planned as a result of this transaction.

Video: Jim Cramer rips into Citi's hot-cold Apple analysis

Cramer on Citi. Click to view.

Cramer on Citi. Click to view.

FORTUNE -- I'd been wondering what to say about Citigroup's (C) coverage of Apple (AAPL), which took a sharp turn for the worse with the departure of its 16-year veteran analyst Richard Gardner last spring.

Not only did Citi miss Apple's run from $560 to $705 -- a six-month stretch when the bank provided no coverage at all -- but then the new team gave clients a 20-day one-two punch: Issuing a Buy at $571 just before the stock fell to $509.79, then downgrading Apple to Neutral just before shares bounced back to $533.90.

As I say, I was wondering whether to comment on this string of spectacularly bad advice when "kylobbyist," a long-time member of Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board (and no fan of CNBC's Jim Cramer) pointed out that the king of hot-and-cold Apple TV commentators tore into Citi's back-to-back reports Tuesday night. "I just spit out a nice glass of cabernet," she posted. "I'm about to gag."

I found the No Huddle Offense clip, and embedded it below. Despite a few slips of the tongue, Cramer did a good job. I have nothing to add, except that Citi may regret the day it let Richard Gardner go.

Children Keep Active In Science - Reference and Education ...

December 10th, 2012 by admin

At my high school reunion last week, I ran into an old friend. He and I had a biology class together when we were young. He told me that summer activities were a wonderful activity for youngsters, and that the best activities were science summer camps. He said that his children had attended some that were very enriching to their knowledge of science. He said that they were well worth the money that they cost, and they could meet others there.

MPs to rubber-stamp bank reform

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will get the go-ahead to force banks to shield their routine retail operations from riskier investment banking activities when MPs announce the conclusions of an inquiry into banking reform on Friday.

The Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards will also recommend that the government can resort to a "nuclear option" of breaking up banks if they try to find ways around the new rules, commission sources said.

Britain is reforming its banks to avoid a repeat of the failures of 2008 when it was forced to pump 45 billion pounds and 20 billion pounds into Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group respectively to keep them afloat at the height of the global financial crisis.

The commission, initially set up to examine the conduct of banks following a series of scandals, was asked by Chancellor George Osborne in October to conduct pre-legislative scrutiny of the government's Banking Reform Bill.

Commission members have expressed concerns over the lack of detail in the bill which they believe makes legislation vulnerable to being watered down if bank lobbyists put pressure on future governments.

The commission has considered ways to avoid that and will recommend the threat of full separation if banks don't comply - an idea supported by several witnesses, including John Vickers, who was the architect of the initial proposals as head of the Independent Commission on Banking.

"There is concern over the circumventing or undermining of the ring-fence by banks and that, over time, there will be an erosion of the effectiveness of it," one of the commission sources said.

Vickers' plans are designed to protect the taxpayer by putting a shield around deposits from individuals and small businesses so that they are not at risk in a bank failure and the government is therefore not required to step in to rescue an ailing institution.

However, some committee members, including former British Chancellor Nigel Lawson, have argued that full separation offers a better remedy and would stop the more aggressive culture of investment banks infiltrating retail banks.

They believe that culture is partly to blame for the misselling of payment protection insurance by retail banks, which has cost the industry billions of pounds in compensation, and the misselling of unsuitable interest rate swaps to small businesses.

The cross-party commission, which is headed by Conservative Andrew Tyrie and also includes the next Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has spent the last three months deliberating over reform of the industry.

It has taken evidence from the chief executives of all Britain's major banks as well as regulators, politicians and central bankers.

Influential voices from overseas also contributed to the debate. Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve Chairman at the forefront of regulatory thinking in the United States appeared as did Erkki Liikanen, the governor of the Bank of Finland, who has said European banks should separate deposit-taking businesses.

Banks reluctantly accepted the principle of ring-fencing after initial resistance although some remain unconvinced. RBS Chief Executive Stephen Hester told the commission the proposals carried a "huge risk of moral hazard".

"You are giving a charter in everyone's minds for the next time there is a problem inside the ring fence, (the bank) gets bailed out by one mechanism or another," he said.

Hester argued that the majority of the industry's problems had occurred within retail banking, rather than investment banking, and said authorities should aim for a system in which no part of a bank needs bailing out.

The commission has debated at length whether banks should be allowed to sell derivatives within the ring-fenced operations. Interest rate swaps are at the centre of a misselling scandal which could cost banks billions of pounds. Britain's financial regulator estimates 44,000 interest rate swaps have been wrongly sold to small businesses.

A commission source said it was likely to recommend simple derivatives will be allowed within the ring-fence if they are relevant to the businesses acquiring them.

The commission will intensify its examination of banking standards in the new year.

Google selects five additional Kansas City markets for Fiber rollout

Google Fiber

It's not just in Kansas City anymore -- it's in the surrounding neighborhoods. Google's rolling out its Fiber service to five more areas in the midwestern municipality starting in the new year. After putting the finishing touches on installations in the Dub's Dread area, households in Piper Schools, Delaware Ridge, Painted Hills, Open Door and Arrowhead will be next on deck to sign-up for Mountain View's nascent TV and internet services. Google's provided an updated chart with installation boundaries and respective deadlines for eligible homes, instructing denizens of these fiberhoods to select from among three available packages: Gigabit + TV plan, Gigabit Internet Plan or Free Internet Plan. And if hedging your bets on a untested service has you wary of signing on the dotted line, the search giant's also arranged for prospective subs to demo its fiber optic wares at the appropriately dubbed Fiber Space. Click on the source below for more details and an opportunity to be next in line for Google's great digital expansion.

Boeheim wins 900th; No. 3 Syracuse 72, Detroit 68

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) ? Jim Boeheim became the third Division I men's coach to reach 900 wins as No. 3 Syracuse beat Detroit 72-68 on Monday night in the Gotham Classic.

Boeheim, 68 and in his 37th year at his alma mater, is 900-304 and joined an elite fraternity. Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) are the only other men's Division I coaches to win that many games.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, Boeheim's college roommate, teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, and Roosevelt Bouie, a star on Boeheim's first team in 1976-77, were in the Carrier Dome crowd of 17,902. Midway through the second half, fans were given placards featuring cardboard cutouts of Boeheim's face with 900 wins printed on the back to celebrate.

Boeheim was presented a jersey encased in glass with 900 emblazoned on it.

"I'm happy. I've stayed around long enough," Boeheim said at center court. "I was a little nervous."

James Southerland had 22 points for Syracuse (10-0), which increased its home winning streak to 30 games, longest in the nation. Detroit (6-5), which lost 77-74 at St. John's in the second game of the season and 74-61 at Pitt earlier this month, had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Orange point guard Michael Carter-Williams, who had 10 or more assists in four straight games and six altogether, finished with 10 assists and 12 points, his sixth straight double-double.

Juwan Howard Jr. and Doug Anderson both scored 18 points and Nick Minnerath had 13 for Detroit. Ray McCallum Jr., Detroit's leading scorer at 19.4 points per game, finished with nine, while Jason Calliste had seven.

Southerland scored a career-high 35 points, matching a school record with nine 3-pointers, in a win at Arkansas in late November and, after an 0-for-10 slump over three games, found his range again Saturday night with three 3s in a win over Canisius. He finished 5 of 8 from behind the arc against the Titans.

Syracuse led 40-21 at halftime, and was cruising midway through the second half when the public address announcer in the Carrier Dome invited fans to stick around for the postgame celebration. That stoked the Titans to spoil the moment as the game wound down, and they made it worrisome for the hometown crowd.

Howard scored 11 points to key a 16-0 run, his two free throws pulling Detroit within 67-63 with 55.1 seconds left. But Carter-Williams hit three of four free throws to hold off the Titans.

One of the keys to breaking Syracuse's 2-3 zone is hitting the long ball, and Detroit struck out in the first half. The Titans were 0 for 10 and the lone 3 they did make ? by McCallum with just over 6 minutes left ? was negated by a shot-clock violation.

The Titans went nearly 7 minutes without a basket, and when they missed Southerland made them pay. He hit consecutive 3s ? from the wing and the top of the key ? to boost the Syracuse lead to 27-13 with 7:25 left.

After Howard hit a jumper from the wing to snap Detroit's scoreless drought, the Orange finished the half with a 13-6 run. The 21 points at halftime were a season low for the Titans.

C.J. Fair started the Syracuse surge with a layup and follow shot, Southerland hit two more 3s to finish the half 5 of 6 from behind the arc, and Carter-Williams hit a 3 at the shot-clock buzzer with 4 seconds left.

It hardly mattered that Brandon Triche, the Orange's leading scorer, had only one point. The Orange were 6 of 10 on 3-pointers and shot 55.6 percent (15 of 27), and it seemed unlikely the Titans would deprive Boeheim of his milestone victory.

Detroit was 10 of 29 in the half and 28 of 60 for the game, finishing 3 of 18 from long range.

Comedy and Public Speaking - Designkitchen Blog

Written by Barbara Luciani

This past week myself and a few colleagues from DK had a chance to attend a public speaking training session with our dear Bumper Carroll.

Bumper luckily comes from a past life in improvisational theater (or ?improv?) where he has done things like acting, writing, and most importantly (for us) ? facilitating group sessions using improve techniques to make us better co-workers and speakers.

For those who don?t know, improv it?s the art of collectively generating stories out of a word or a situation ? typically an audience suggestion. More often than not, improvised scenes turn comedic (think Saturday Night Live) - but that is not the sole purpose of improvisation.

In my short experience with improv classes I have learned that many of the skills learned on stage are also applicable in real life, for example:

? Always say ?yes and? ? this helps ideas grow and evolve. You cannot build ideas (or scenes) by negating other people?s input

? I?ve got your back ? on stage, actors work as a team. There is common understanding that if one actor gets stuck in a scene, another one will come to rescue ? this is directly transferable to presentations

? There is no wrong answer ? everything that is said on stage is 100% true and valid. ?The cat ate my lipstick and then ran after the aliens on the roof? = valid statement

Spending the day with Bumper and other colleagues from various backgrounds and functional teams was a wonderful way to learn about other valuable and transferrable skills from the world of improv that can be used when running meetings and presentations:

The basics:

? Make eye contact

? Be articulate

? Speak up

? Be aware of what?s happening around you (pay attention! You may need to go to the rescue of a fellow presenter)

? Be available ? no one wants to exchange ideas with someone whose arms are crossed.

? Acknowledge what other are doing

? Be concise

? Be physically engaging and be aware of your body language

? Be an active listener; don?t listen just so you can respond. Listen so you can intelligently participate in a conversation or presentation

? Assume the confidence that you admire in other people when speaking in public

? Be aware of, and how you use:

? Volume ? low volume can transmit a sense of intimacy, while high volume is a good focus grabber.

? Pause ? use of it to help set things apart

? Pace ? change pace when talking about more/less important things

? Tone ? use various different tones to convey enthusiasm, alertness, etc ? create dynamism.

And last, but not least:

Speak with a passion.

The best way to convince an audience is to demonstrate how much you care about your subject. Be excited and be passionate, and all else will fall into place.

Thank you Bumper!!

iPhone 5 hits China, as Apple market share slips

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The China release of its iPhone 5 on Friday should win Apple Inc some respite from a recent slide in its share of what is likely already the world's biggest smartphone market, but its longer-term hopes may depend on new technology being tested by China's top telecoms carrier.

Cupertino, California-based Apple has been in talks about a tie-up with China Mobile for four years. A deal with China's biggest carrier is seen as crucial to improve Apple's distribution in a market of 290 million users - which is forecast to double this year.

China is Apple's second-largest and fastest-growing market - it brings in around 15 percent of total revenue - but the company's failure to strike a deal with China Mobile means it is missing out on a large number of phone users. As the China pie grows, Apple's sales increase, but without China Mobile, it's losing ground at a faster rate compared to other brands.

"In absolute terms, this (iPhone 5) launch will certainly result in strong sales for Apple in China. However, in relative terms, I don't believe it will move the needle enough in market share," said Shiv Putcha, a Mumbai-based analyst at Ovum, a global technology consultant.

On Friday, just one person was waiting outside the Apple store in Shanghai's financial district when its doors opened at 9 a.m., a contrast to the launch of the iPhone 4 earlier this year when rowdy crowds pelted a Beijing store with eggs.

China Mobile and Apple initially said they were separated only by a technical issue - as the Chinese carrier runs a different 3G network from most of the world - but that has evolved into a broader and more complex issue of revenue-sharing.

"China Mobile and Apple still have to solve many issues, such as the business model, articles of cooperation and revenue division, but I believe we will reach an agreement eventually," China Mobile CEO Li Yue was reported by Chinese media as saying in Guangzhou last week.

Apple China declined to comment. China Mobile said it had no update to the Apple discussions.

STRONG PRE-ORDERS

Apple's ranking in China's smartphone market slipped to sixth in July-September, according to research firm IDC, but investors, primed to look to China product launches for an uptick in Apple's quarterly sales, have good headline numbers to digest - more than 300,000 iPhones pre-ordered on one carrier alone. But it's the lack of a deal with the No.1 carrier that prevents those numbers being stronger.

The iPhone is currently sold through Apple's seven stores, resellers and through China Unicom and China Telecom - which together have fewer than half the mobile subscribers of bigger rival China Mobile.

"Apple's market share declined because of the transition between the iPhone 4S and 5. Their market share will recover (with the iPhone 5), but if you don't have China Mobile, the significant market share gains will be very difficult," said Huang Leping, an analyst at Nomura in Hong Kong.

TD-LTE: STILL DISTANT

Cutting a deal with a Chinese state-owned carrier may be less optimal than the deals Apple is used to in other markets, and analysts note that China Mobile wouldn't necessarily open the flood gates for Apple.

Ovum's Putcha believes Apple and China Mobile will eventually strike a deal - though this would be for an iPhone running on China Mobile's next-generation network rather than its current 3G network.

Of China Mobile's 704 million subscribers, only 79 million are on its 3G network, and Apple has been reluctant to sign up to China Mobile's under-utilized, homegrown TD-SCDMA technology. "Apple likely doesn't see the return-on-investment in extending themselves for TD-SCDMA," Putcha said.

China Mobile is currently trialing its next-generation network, TD-LTE, which could be of more interest to Apple, but full-scale commercial use - and an iPhone tie-up - could still be years away.

ANDROID THREAT

Meanwhile, rivals are circling, eating away at Apple's smartphone market share. Samsung Electronics, Lenovo Group and little-known Chinese brand Coolpad held the top three slots in the third quarter, according to IDC.

All three have relationships with China Mobile and offer smartphone models at different price points. Apple competes exclusively at the high-end, and even there, rivals are rolling out models with China Mobile. Last week, Nokia said it planned to release its latest Lumia smartphone with China's top carrier, which is also expected to launch Research in Motion's new Blackberry 10, analysts predict.

"The threat will still come more from the Android camp where they have many vendors already working with China Mobile and offering high-end phones," said TZ Wong, a Singapore-based IDC analyst.

While these smartphones don't generate the buzz of a new iPhone, Chinese buyers are not known for their brand loyalty, and this could siphon away users considering an Apple upgrade.

"I've used a Blackberry, Android and iOS and, personally, I want to try the Windows 8," said Andy Huang, a 37-year-old fund manager, who owns most iPad models, an iPhone 4 and a 4S. "I think the Windows 8 is very innovative."

With a China Mobile deal looking some way off, Apple could always boost market share by offering cheaper models - the basic iPhone 5 will cost 5,288 yuan ($850) without a contract - though this appears an unlikely route for a high-end brand.

"If they want to expand market share, probably the only way to do it here dramatically would be to put out a lower cost phone," said Michael Clendenin, managing director at RedTech Advisors. "It's really uncertain if they'd decide to go that route ... Apple's a mystery in that regard."

($1 = 6.2518 Chinese yuan)

Screenwriters Rehab: Don't Keep Knocking On The Door When You ...

? ? ?A big mistake screenwriters make is waiting for someone to help them. I don't mean with your screenplays, but with what I like to call the "maintenance" of your career. Once your screenplay is ready (meaning you've done several drafts, gotten positive feedback and you're confident it's as good as it can be), it's like a child being sent out into the world.

? ? ?Unfortunately, the world doesn't care and it won't be a welcoming place for your baby to enter into.

? ? ?That's where you come in. Unless you have contacts in high places or a referral to someone who can help you, you and only you are responsible for finding a contact in a high place and getting your own referrals.

? ? ?Too many new screenwriters are helpless.?

? ? ?They act like foreigners in a country who don't speak the language.

? ? ?They are timid about asking for help.?

? ? ?They are lazy. They feel that the hard work was in getting their screenplay in shape. I won't say that that's the easy part, but finding an agent, manager or producer who will even read your script is almost as difficult.

? ? ?Whatever discipline and work habits you used to write your screenplay, you must do the same in your pursuit of representation or an interested producer.?

? ? ?Allocate an hour day (more if you can spare it) to surfing the Internet for screenwriting sites and contests with the hope of finding a name who will be receptive to reading your script or at least reading a synopsis.

? ? Get to know people, especially other screenwriters or people working in the business. Join writers support groups. Go to symposiums on screenwriting or breaking into the business. Everywhere you go talk to people. Schmooze. You never know where you'll find someone who knows someone who knows someone else.

? ? ?And keep writing query letters and query emails. Find ways to nail down the exact email address of someone important. Or even of someone not important, but who may know someone who is.

? ? ?The thing you should do least of all is to wait for someone to knock on your door, out of the blue. Or wait for someone who said they would help you, but didn't. If you encounter someone who seems positive and receptive, be thankful, but also be mistrustful. They may be lying or just yessing you to death so you'll stop bugging them.

? ? ?Be relentless, be polite, be cautious and be smart enough to know who has your best interests at heart and who doesn't.

? ? ?And hope for some luck!

Intelligent control for performance: Reducing drag, saving fuel

Dec. 13, 2012 ? NASA Dryden's versatile F/A-18 Full Scale Advanced Systems Testbed (FAST) aircraft recently completed a series of flights that explored reducing fuel consumption during cruise flight conditions by making small modifications to existing control laws and mechanisms in the aircraft's flight control computer.

As part of the Intelligent Control for Performance (ICP) research project, a special computer code called a peak-seeking algorithm was programmed into the aircraft's Airborne Research Test System computer. This code enables the computer to precisely adjust flight control surface deflections in order to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Large jetliners and cargo aircraft consume most of their fuel during the cruise portion of flight, so optimizing fuel consumption would reduce costs and pollution. For NASA, developing new control system methods like this helps meet the agency's Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project goals of reduced fuel burn and emissions.

Preliminary ICP flight results indicate that a three- to five-percent reduction in fuel burn was achieved compared to the baseline trim state at two flight conditions. The ICP technique shows much promise for reducing fuel burn in transport aircraft in the future.

For another experiment planned to fly next summer on the FAST F/A-18, a novel "thin film" sensor manufactured by TAO Systems, Inc., is currently being applied to one of the aircraft's wing surfaces. This technology will allow real-time characterization of the airflow over the wing. This sensor capability could lead to considerable weight reduction, fuel savings, and flight safety enhancement in future aircraft designs by revealing the actual flight loads on an aircraft to help ensure that design loads are not exceeded.

Another use for this technology could be to reduce the effects of gusts and turbulence on an aircraft when coupled with appropriate flight control algorithms.

Utahns' incomes can't keep up with insurance costs | The Salt Lake ...

Health ? Study says premiums rose a few times faster than Utah wages in 2003-2011.

The average premium for employer-sponsored family health insurance rose 61 percent in Utah from 2003 to 2011, taking a bigger bite out of household incomes, according to a report from a nonprofit health care research group.

Annual premiums for family plans jumped from $8,349 to $13,455 during the nine-year period, the Commonwealth Fund said. Across the U.S., family premiums rose 62 percent, from $9,249 to $15,022.

?

Utah health insurance premiums spiked between 2003 and 2011

Average family premium in 2003: ? $8,349

Average family premium in 2011 ? $13,455

Median family income in 2003 ? $61,200

Median family income in 2011 ? $73,460

Family premium as a percent of family median income in 2003 ? 13.6 percent

Family premium as a percent of family median income in 2011 ? 18.3 percent

Premiums for single Utahns rose 37 percent, from $3,352 in 2003 to $4,597 last year, the New York-based fund said. There was no comparable U.S. figure.

Health insurance as a percent of Utah?s median income increased from less than 14 percent in 2003 to between 17 percent and 19.9 percent.

Nationally, the report found that workers are also paying more out of pocket, as employee payments for their share of health insurance premiums rose an average of 74 percent. Deductibles more than doubled, up 117 percent from 2003 to 2011.

"Wherever you live in the United States, health insurance is expensive, and for many middle- as well as low-income families it is becoming ever less affordable," said Cathy Schoen, lead author of the report.
