Ways To Stop Kids BullyingKids bullying is a kind of activity that is hard to be handled by kids themselves without any prior teaching. A child will not be aware that he or she may cross a situation of bullying in life. Thus, he or she would be embarrassed when faced with such a situation. You should never suppress your feelings or give in to bullies.

You should never fear them and not raise your voice in the fear of getting more hurt. Bullying is a tainted immoral act that needs to be opposed and stopped. Here are certain ways to stop bullying of kids.

Best?Ways to Stop Kids Bullying

Never Be Alone

Teach your child that he or she should not go to places where there is no one around. It is always good to stay in places with friends or many people. If something happens your child would find it easy to get help. If one person is bad there will be ten good people around to help. So, hold on to people whom you can trust or turn to when you feel like you would be bullied or if you already are facing this horrid situation.

Speak Up

Ask your child not to keep silent when bullied. This would encourage the one who bullies. The person may become fearless that the child will not complaint to anyone and will continue with bullying. Telling straight to the person what you don?t like will give a little fear to the person.

A child should be bold enough to speak up for his or her friend also. Being brave in itself might stop bullying in certain cases. It will also warn your attackers that they are messing with the wrong person and they would readily back off in a lot of cases.

Seek an Adult?s Help

When the situation becomes worse for your child to handle, tell your child to get to an adult at once. At places like school, neighbourhood and known places the child could go to known and trustworthy adults like teachers. In unknown places, try to go to the police for help.

Effective Ways To Stop Kids Bullying

They are pretty helpful and do the needful. Adults would always intervene and see to it that you would not become a victim of bullying. They would also warn your attackers which would scare them, and helping you in not being their victim the next time.

Avoid the Person

When your child is constantly being bullied by someone, it is better to avoid him or her. If there is an option to go through another way, it could be used. Teach your child to avoid such people. It is not being afraid of them but it is to prevent yourself from further nasty action of such person.

Also, it is better to prevent than to seek cure. Plus, when you avoid the person, he might give up on bullying you or find some other task to engage his or her mind with. When you deal with the other person, it urges them to mess with you so at times, avoiding is better.

Staying Calm

Bring your child in a such a way that he or she knows to control fear when confronted by bullies. Panicking or anger might worsen the situation. Show them how to answer in a calm and friendly manner. Or just walk away from the place without speaking anything. This will normalize the problem and without hurting anyone.

Feel Confident on Yourself

If anyone keep calling names, that might hurt your child?s feelings. Tell your child that he or she is special and so should not feel bad on hearing such words.

Effective Ways To Stop Kids Bullying

There is nothing true in it and it should be just ignored. At the same time teach your child not to repeat the same even with the one who bullies him or her.

Listen to Your Child

When your child keeps coming to you with complaints about anyone, don?t ignore it as children?s play. Listen carefully to find whether your child is being bullied. Give necessary advice and if it is beyond control talk to the person responsible like your child?s teacher. Meet other parents? of affected children and discuss what is actually happening. It is easier to check the bullies when you are grouped together.

Bullying is a morbid practice induced upon weaker kids by stronger kids. It leaves emotional scars upon its victims. Thus, it is really necessary for the kids themselves or an adult to stop this malpractice. The above mentioned steps are really effectual in stopping kids from getting bullied. Pay close attention to them and stop this unethical and immoral crime from taking place.

Goodbye Clinton? President Obama prepares for cabinet shuffle

As President Obama prepares for his second term, preparations have begun for the traditional shuffling of the Cabinet.

Top priority for the president: filling slots for those top officials heading - if not running - for the door: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner.

To replace Clinton, Democratic insiders suggest that U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Susan Rice is the frontrunner, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., also a viable candidate.

Rice has been harshly criticized by Republicans for the erroneous comments she made on Sunday news talk shows after the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, comments that were based on intelligence reports that falsely blamed the attack on a protest against an anti-Muslim video. When the president, during his recent press conference, offered a vociferous defense of Rice, many of those close to him began to suspect he was tipping his hand as to what he might decide.

To replace Geithner at Treasury, White House chief of staff Jack Lew is thought to have the inside track if he wants it, with other possibilities including Neal Wolin, the current deputy secretary of the Treasury and Lael Brainard, current under secretary of the Treasury for international affairs.

Other informed sources suggest that there is consideration being given to a business/CEO type such as investor Roger Altman, former Time/Warner chair Richard Parsons, and Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg.

Those are the two most pressing jobs to fill, with Clinton exhausted from a long stretch in government - eight years as first lady, eight as senator, and four as secretary of state - and the president having personally promised Geithner's wife that he could leave as soon as possible after the election.

Any of the business/CEO types being discussed for treasury secretary could also serve as secretary of commerce, a position that for the Obama administration has proved as troublesome as the role of drummer in Spinal Tap. Jeff Zients, the acting director of the Office of Management & Budget, is said to be under consideration.

It's too flip to refer to it as a consolation prize, but informed sources say that - with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also planning on leaving - Kerry could be offered the position secretary of defense if he wants it, though the Massachusetts senator has suggested he only wants State. Another option, Michelle Flournoy, a former under secretary of defense for Policy, would be the first female to serve in that position. There was some discussion of National Security Adviser Tom Donilon moving across the river, but it seems clear, sources say, that he's staying where he is.

If Lew leaves to take the position at Treasury, some possible replacements for him as chief of staff include deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough or Vice President Biden's former chief of staff Ron Klain. Tom Nides, deputy secretary of state for management and resources, has also been discussed.

President Obama's senior adviser David Plouffe has also long discussed leaving the White House. There are many options to fill his shoes, including the elevation of communications director Dan Pfeiffer. Also possible: bringing back former press secretary Robert Gibbs, or former deputy chief of staff/campaign manager Jim Messina. Another option might be to bring in some of the people who were part of the messaging shop in the campaign - David Simus, who served as director of opinion research for the campaign, or Larry Grisolano, who did ads for campaign.

LG 'Optimus G2' rumored for May launch with 1080p screen

Android Central

LG's Optimus G isn't even available in some countries yet, but already it seems a successor could be in the works. Reports from Korea's MK Business News suggests that the "Optimus G2" (said to be a provisional name) could be scheduled for launch as early as next May. Key upgrades are said to include a a 5-inch, 1080p display, up from the 4.7-inch 1280x768 panel in the original, and a 2GHz quad-core Qualcomm CPU. LG will reportedly pit the G2 against the successor to Samsung's Galaxy S3.

But here's the kicker -- the article also claims the "Optimus G2" will come with Android "Key Lime Pie" on-board. KLP is the widely-expected codename for the next major iteration of Android, presumably either version 4.3 or 5.0. We'd be very (very) surprised to see a fresh version of Android so quickly after 4.2, especially considering the short interval between the two flavors of Jelly Bean.

Nevertheless, as a Nexus partner, LG would have privileged access to code ahead of time, which might help it get devices running newer versions of Android to market more rapidly than other OEMs. Stranger things have happened, but we're still inclined to take this part of the story with a large pinch of salt.

The 5-inch screen size and 1080p resolution look set to become the new standard for high-end phones in 2013. HTC has already launched the Droid DNA on Verizon in the states, while Sony's next high-end device, "Yuga," is rumored to sport a similar display. Likewise, Samsung is rumored to be hard at work on a 4.99-inch 1080p SuperAMOLED panel for use in future phones.

Whatever form it takes, the Optimus G's successor will find itself among plenty of competition.

Knight in talks for market-making unit sale: sources

(Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc is in talks about possibly selling its market-making operation, its largest and most profitable business, but it is not known if a deal will happen, a source said on Saturday.

The securities firm has been approached by at least two rivals about its market-making operation, which uses complicated computer models to match buy and sell orders in stocks and options, another source familiar with the matter said.

Knight's board of directors is expected to get separate proposals next week for the market-making business from high-speed trading firms Getco LLC and Virtu Financial LLC, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people who were briefed on the discussions. Other potential buyers also could approach the board about that business and perhaps others, it said.

Knight has virtually all of its customers back after a massive August trading glitch and could decide to keep the business, one of the sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Knight said it does not comment on rumors and speculation.

Getco and Virtu spokespeople declined comment on the report.

In October, Knight Capital posted a third-quarter loss of $389.9 million following a massive software glitch.

On August 1, Knight, one of the biggest executors of U.S. stock trades, went live with new software that had been improperly installed. The software conflicted with old code that was to have been deleted, unleashing a flood of orders to the New York Stock Exchange, and leaving Knight with a massive position it had to unload at a loss.

AP PHOTOS: TV icon Larry Hagman through the years

Larry Hagman, whose masterful portrayal of the charmingly loathsome J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" brought him his greatest stardom, has died at the age of 81. That role on CBS' long-running nighttime soap opera was a ratings bonanza for the network, particularly the "Who shot J.R.?" story twist.

Years before "Dallas," Hagman gained TV fame as a nice guy with the fluffy 1965-70 NBC comedy "I Dream of Jeannie." He played Capt. Tony Nelson, an astronaut whose life is disrupted when he finds a comely genie, portrayed by Barbara Eden, and takes her home to live with him.

He also starred in two short-lived sitcoms, "The Good Life" (NBC, 1971-72) and "Here We Go Again" (ABC, 1973). His film work included well-regarded performances in "The Group," ''Harry and Tonto" and "Primary Colors."

Here, in images, are some of Hagman's memorable moments:

Obama commends Netanyahu on ceasefire pledge

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and commended him for agreeing to the Egyptian government's ceasefire plan in the Middle East, the White House said.

Israel and Hamas agreed on Wednesday to a ceasefire brokered by Egypt to end eight days of fighting in the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 140 Palestinians and five Israelis.

"The president expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister's efforts to work with the new Egyptian government to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and a more durable solution to this problem," a White House statement said.

Obama reiterated his commitment to Israel's security and also said he was committed to seeking funds for joint missile defense programs.

Blue Jays hire John Gibbons as manager again

TORONTO (AP) ? John Gibbons was hired as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second time Tuesday, returning to a team that just invigorated its roster after a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins.

"I never would have guessed this could happen," he said at a news conference.

Gibbons managed Toronto 2004-08 and had a 305-305 record, making him the third-winningest manager in franchise history.

He succeeds John Farrell, who spurned Toronto for his dream managing job in Boston. Gibbons, however, takes over a very different team from the one Farrell managed.

The surprise announcement came a day after the Blue Jays completed a mega deal in which they acquired All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle from Miami. Toronto agreed to the trade last week and Commissioner Bud Selig approved it Monday. The Blue Jays, extraordinarily busy in this offseason, also finalized a $16 million, two-year deal with free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera.

"Who wouldn't want to be here?" Gibbons said. "The front office has put together a legitimate contending type team."

Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos had said he wanted someone who was familiar with the organization and city. Anthopoulos was an assistant GM when Gibbons managed Toronto. Gibbons joins Cito Gaston as managers serving two stints with the Blue Jays.

"I don't know that there was anybody better in terms of managing a bullpen, connecting with the players, connecting with the front office, holding players accountable," Anthopoulos said.

His best season was in 2006, when Toronto went 87-75 to finish second in the division ? the same season he had a well-publicized blowup with players Shea Hillenbrand Ted Lilly. Gibbons said he regrets the physical altercation with Hillenbrand and called it a black eye, but Anthopoulos defended him and said if you can't play for Gibbons then you can't play for too many guys.

Gibbons most recently managed the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League (Double-A) in the San Diego Padres' organization last season. He also had three seasons as the Kansas City Royals' bench coach.

Gibbons joined the Blue Jays' coaching staff in 2002 as a bullpen catcher and was promoted midseason to first base coach. He served in that capacity until replacing Carlos Tosca in 2004. Before joining the Blue Jays the first time, Gibbons spent 11 seasons working with the New York Mets.

Blue Jays President Paul Beeston said he was equally surprised when the Marlins trade became a possibility and when Anthopoulos told him he was interested in hiring Gibbons. "They were back to back shockers," Beeston said with a laugh.

"I said 'Are you serious'," Beeston said of Gibbons. "Forget about him being an intellectual, he's a baseball guy. And those are the guys you really want in your organization."

Beeston said the Marlins trade makes the Blue Jays contenders in the AL East. They haven't reached the playoffs since winning their second consecutive World Series in 1993. Only Kansas and Pittsburgh have longer playoff droughts.

Beeston said the payroll currently is about $120 million. Anthopoulos said the Blue Jays have gone beyond what they thought the payroll could be, but said he was promised that if the right opportunity came along ownership would spend.

Anthopoulos first targeted Johnson and but quickly learned Reyes and Buehrle were also available. He told Beeston he knew it was a lot of money, but said Beeston encouraged him and checked with the owners, Rogers Communications.

"I always felt when the opportunity was right that Rogers would invest in the ballclub," Beeston said. "We've spent the money now let's go out and win."

As Battle Over Damascus Looms, Britain Recognizes Rebels

Fighting around Damascus heated up on Tuesday, according to Reuters, as Syrian forces tried to oust rebels from a nearby stronghold.

The push comes as the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) racks up important military gains in the north and received recognition from a tenth nation, the United Kingdom, as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Here's the latest on unfolding events in the Syrian civil war.

Rebels seize bases, headquarters

While Syrian government forces have been trying to take the suburban city of Daraya on Damascus' outskirts, rebel forces have seized a special forces base near Aleppo in the north and took control of an army battalion headquarters south of Damascus. Another air defense base at Sheikh Suleiman 11 miles from Turkey was also captured by the SNC.

The Turkish foreign minister confirmed that NATO states would provide the neighoring country with a Patriot missile system to help defend against Syrian cross-border shelling.

Ally building gas pipeline

Iran, one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's few allies, began constructing a $10 billion natural gas pipeline to Syria, according to an Associated Press report. The 750-mile project is expected to be finished by the second half of 2013, dependent on Assad's surviving the current civil war.

International recognition for SNC growing

Britain joined with France, Italy, Turkey, and Gulf Arab states in recognizing the SNC, an important diplomatic goal for the rebels. Recognition could also lead to arms deals.

Coalition spokesman Walid al-Bunni welcomed the step, according to another report from Reuters. "This step is very important and I think it will encourage more Syrians to join the coalition and trust it and it will also encourage other European states to recognize it."

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland addressed concerns that an extremist Islamist faction had created an Islamic state in Aleppo, saying that the "Syrian Opposition Coalition has supported a platform of pluralism, a platform of tolerance, a platform that respects the rights of Syrians of all stripes, it's not surprising to us that those who want an extremist state or a heavily Islamist state in Syria have taken issue with this."

She noted that Syrian Opposition Coalition President Mouaz al-Khatib wanted a "nation of tolerance" and stated this was the goal for the U.S. as well.

Although the United States has voiced support for the SNC, it does not recognize it as the sole legal representative.

NFL Rumors: Should Green Bay Packers Sign K Neil Rackers?

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

The Green Bay Packers (7-3) defeated the Detroit Lions (4-6) 24-21 Sunday afternoon in a close game that came down to the wire. Many would say the game should have never been as close as the final score suggests if only Green Bay placekicker Mason Crosby would have made the necessary field goals. Do the Packers have time to wait for Crosby to come around or should they sign free agent kicker Neil Rackers?

Crosby, who has been one of the better kickers in the NFL over the past five years, has missed seven of his last 13 field goal attempts and looks to be on a downward spiral. Considering Green Bay is already dealing with several key injuries and an offense that has been inconsistent at times, the last thing the Packers need is a kicker who cannot convert field goals.

Through 10 games, Crosby has made a career-low 66.7 percent of his attempts, which has given head coach Mike McCarthy very little confidence to use him from long range. On Green Bay?s first drive against Detroit, the Packers faced a fourth-and-4 in which would have been a 49-yard field goal attempt. McCarthy opted to go for it on fourth down instead of the field goal attempt because he felt his offense had a higher percentage of converting than Crosby did. Green Bay did not move the chains and turned the ball over on downs.

Later in the game, Crosby missed a 50-yard attempt wide right but was given a second chance after Lions head coach Jim Schwartz used a timeout. Crosby followed it up with a second attempt that missed wide left. The 28-year-old also did not convert a 38-yard attempt that would have tied the game in the second half. Crosby got an ear full from McCarthy once he reached the sideline.

Fans from around the world took to various social media sites to express their frustration by pleading for the Packers to cut Crosby after the game. However, McCarthy said after the victory that Crosby will be the team?s kicker and did not give any reason to believe Green Bay would bring in some competition this week.

?Mason has got to put the ball through the uprights,? McCarthy said. ?That?s something we?ve got to do a better job of. I thought Mason had a very good week of work. Didn?t hit it today the way he needs to hit it. We will continue with Mason. We will not blink as far as our commitment to him.?

Several players were shown talking to Crosby on the Packers sideline to show their support for the six-year veteran. Those same players congratulated him as well after he converted a 39-yard attempt with 19 seconds left in the game.

On the front, Green Bay is showing confidence and support for Crosby. However, behind the scenes could tell a completely different story. The Packers have a chance to be No. 1 in the NFC North after Monday night and will have a great opportunity to make set up another legitimate postseason run in the ensuing weeks. There is no way general manager Ted Thompson is willing to bank the success of the team on an inconsistent kicker.

Green Bay must consider bringing in another kicker to give Crosby competition in practice or possibly even replace him if it comes to it. A solid placekicker that would be open for the job is Rackers. The 13-year veteran converted 84.2 percent of his field goal attempts with the Houston Texans last season and has not fallen below that mark on a season in four years.

Rackers was cut by the Washington Redskins in August and is currently unemployed. He no longer has a big leg like Crosby does but he certainly makes a much higher percentage of field goals, which is what the Packers need. There is a good chance bringing in Rackers will not solve the current crisis on special teams as there is no guarantee he can deliver. However, Green Bay must consider this option if Crosby continues missing kicks.

I fully expect the Packers to stick with Crosby a couple more weeks before making a decision to part ways with him. However, if he cannot pull it together soon Green Bay must bring in someone talented such as Rackers to take over kicking duties.

(AP) ? The owner of an oil platform that caught fire after an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico last week said Sunday that it has expanded its search for a missing worker, and doctors said one of four men burned in the blaze is improving and is now in fair condition.

Two remained in critical condition and one in serious condition, doctors said.

Three dive boats are now working around the burned platform and Plaquemines Parish sheriff's deputies are checking beaches, Black Elk Energy of Houston said in a statement emailed Sunday evening.

It said all helicopter companies flying in the area have been asked to keep an eye out, and a search-and-rescue dog will be brought to the platform Monday.

The body of a second missing worker was found Saturday and turned over to the Jefferson Parish coroner, added the company, which said it is cooperating with investigators.

"We remain focused on the victims and their families, including those injured," the statement said.

At Baton Rouge General Medical Center's burn unit, Wilberto Ilagan, 50, of the Philippines, told Dr. Jeffrey Littleton that he wanted to send a message, according to a news release issued Sunday.

"To my relatives, to my family, and to my country, I am alive and in good health," Ilagan said. "I am burned, but my heart and lungs are healthy."

According to The Advocate (http://bit.ly/ZT9WLy ), Littleton said Sunday that the other men's names are being withheld because they have not given their consent to release them.

The Philippine Embassy in Washington has said all the workers are from the Philippines.

The Coast Guard has suspended its own search after checking 1,400 square miles near the oil platform, located about 20 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La.

John Hoffman, the president and CEO of Black Elk Energy, said in an earlier statement that the body was found near where the explosion occurred. The dead, missing and wounded workers were employees of oilfield contractor Grand Isle Shipyard, he said.

GIS CEO Mark Pregeant released a statement that the company has notified the families of those involved but was not releasing their names, WWL-TV in New Orleans reported.

Authorities have said the blaze erupted Friday morning while workers were using a torch to cut an oil line on the platform.

Pregeant's statement, however, said the cause of the fire and explosion is unknown and that "initial reports that a welding torch was being used at the time of the incident or that an incorrect line was cut are completely inaccurate."

A man who answered the phone at the company's Galliano, La., office on Sunday said the company had no comment.

Separate from the explosion, Grand Isle Shipyard is facing a lawsuit by a group of former workers from the Philippines who claim they were confined to cramped living quarters and forced to work long hours for substandard pay. The lawsuit was filed in late 2011 in a Louisiana federal court and is pending. Lawyers for the company have said the workers' claims are false and should be dismissed.

The workers recently obtained conditional class certification for allegations that Grand Isle Shipyard didn't pay them properly for overtime and may have violated other fair-labor standards, said attorney Joseph C. Peiffer. He said a notice will go out soon to let other workers know they might be able to join the lawsuit.

He said he was not representing the injured workers, but didn't rule out the possibility that he might do so.

Meanwhile, Black Elk said no oil was leaking from the charred platform, which hadn't been operating since August.

Black Elk Energy is an independent oil and gas company. The company's website says it holds interests in properties in Texas and Louisiana waters, including 854 wells on 155 platforms.

U.S. offers deploying its troops in Iraq's disputed areas

November 18, 2012

ERBIL-Hewlr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', An informed Kurdish source said on Sunday, that Washington entered on crisis line after Iraq forming Dijla forces between Baghdad and Erbil to end it, while offered to re-deploy the U.S. troops in the disputed areas and considered the armed clash with Kurdish Peshmerga troops as a red line."

The source said in remarks quoted by a Kuwaiti newspaper, that" U.S. diplomats in Baghdad have begun contacts and meetings with the two parties, (Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki )and (Kurdistan Regions President Massoud Barzani) to end the problem and reach a joint agreement to manage the disputed areas," Shafaq news reported.

"One of the submitted solutions is to re-deploy the U.S. forces in the disputed areas to ensure there are no clashes between the army and between the Kurdish Peshmerga", adding that "al-Maliki rejected this proposal."

He added that "Washington does not oppose to re-deploy its military forces in the region if the disputes parties wanted that," stressing that "U.S. Vice President , Joe Biden responsible of the Iraqi file is excited for this step because the U.S. administration will not allow the outbreak of any fighting between Baghdad forces and Erbil forces on the basis that any development represents a severe strike to the United States, which supported the political process in Iraq for nearly ten years,"

The source pointed out that "Biden told Maliki that the armed clash with Kurdish Peshmerga is a red line", warning that "U.S. forces will intervene in the event of the outbreak of fighting in Kirkuk and any other area."

"The U.S. National Security Chancellery is convinced that the movements of al-Maliki to impose his military control on Kurdistan is due to the Iranian and Syrian regimes," adding that "moving in this period under the name of Dijla Operations Command established by Iraqi Prime Minister aims to undermine the Turkish influence and countries in the Gulf Cooperation Councils influence,www.ekurd.net which has grown dramatically in Kurdistan Region recently,"

The president of Iraq's Kurdistan region has ordered its Peshmerga security forces on high alert, a statement issued on Saturday said, attributing the move to clashes with central government forces. An Iraqi general however said that the clashes in question came during an arrest attempt and did not involve the Peshmerga.

The disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad witnessed major security tensions after Iraqi government announced the formation of Dijla Operations Command, which has subjected the army and police forces in Kirkuk, Diyala and Salahuddin provinces and Erbils rejection of these forces because no one discussed the matter with it when it was formed.

Tuz Khurmatu, on Friday witnessed fierce clashes between Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi Tigris (Dijla) Operations troops, during which Two people were killed and 10 others wounded.

The clashes erupted in Tuz Khurmatu district in Salahuddin province when Iraqi soldiers attempted to search a house belonging to a Kurdish official Goran Najam,www.ekurd.net a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK, officials said. Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is the current leader of the PUK, Reuters reported.

The ethnically mixed town of Tuz Khurmato is part an area claimed by the semiautonomous region of Kurdistan and by the Baghdad government.

The oil-rich province of Kirkuk is one of the most disputed areas by the regional government and the Iraqi government in Baghdad.

The Kurds are seeking to integrate the province into the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region clamming it to be historically a Kurdish city, it lies just south border of the Kurdistan autonomous region, the population is a mix of majority Kurds and minority of Arabs, Christians and Turkmen, lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution is related to the normalization of the situation in Kirkuk city and other disputed areas through having back its Kurdish inhabitants and repatriating the Arabs relocated in the city during the former regimes time to their original provinces in central and southern Iraq.

The article also calls for conducting a census to be followed by a referendum to let the inhabitants decide whether they would like Kirkuk to be annexed to the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region or having it as an independent province.

The former regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had forced over 250,000 Kurdish residents to give up their homes to Arabs in the 1970s, to "Arabize" the city and the region's oil industry.

The last ethnic-breakdown census in Iraq was conducted in 1957, well before Saddam began his program to move Arabs to Kirkuk. That count showed 178,000 Kurds, 48,000 Turkomen, 43,000 Arabs and 10,000 Assyrian-Chaldean Christians living in the city.?

Apple Stock Price Slides to a 6 Month Low

When you're hot, you're hot, and when you're cold, well, things are still pretty good if you're Apple. Ahead of the iPhone 5 launch, the Cupertino company saw its share price hit an all-time high a couple months ago, reaching more than $705. Since then, Apple's share price has been steadily declining. Now that the dust has settled from the iPhone 5 launch and iPad mini hype, Apple's share price has started to come down, closing at $526.59 entering the weekend, the lowest it's been in the past six months.

In pre-market trading ahead of Monday morning's bell, Apple's share price is up slightly to $527.68, still well below its recent high. That's a big disparity between the two, but to put it into perspective, Apple's market capitalization now sits at just shy of half a trillion dollars ($496.38 billion). There are far worse situations to be in (just ask AMD, which is trading at $1.86 and is worth $1.23 billion).

Perspective aside, Apple's stock is down about 25 percent from September's high, and that means something. Exactly what it means is up for debate. Some analysts chalk it up to "gravity," noting that Apple's stock price was never truly worth $705 in the first place. Others point to the so-called fiscal cliff of upcoming tax hikes and spending cuts. The tax rate on dividends and capital gains is currently 15 percent, but that's set to expire at the end of the year. Capital gains taxes could go back up to 35 percent.

Whatever the reason, Apple's still in good shape. It is, after all, still the most valuable company in terms of market capitalization.

Fake Twitter Accounts and the Danger for Politicians

One of the less-discussed changes of recent times is the way Twitter has moved centre-stage in the media ecosystem, or at least in the part of it that intersects with politics.

This has happened despite the ongoing growth of Facebook, which now has 1 billion users and seems destined to become the biggest virtual "country" in the world.

But while Zuckerberg's empire may indeed be having an impact on the politics of Middle Eastern countries, it is Twitter that seems to matter in the Anglo-Saxon world. Witness the role it has played in the Newsnight-McAlpine fiasco. Or the way in which several political leaders first conveyed their reaction to the re-election of Obama in tweets. Or the intriguing (not to say hilarious) way that Rupert Murdoch has engaged with it.

So Twitter matters ? or at least is perceived to matter, which often amounts to the same thing. Politicians and other public figures are increasingly obsessed with their footprint on the service ? the number of "followers" they have. Most of the people who have the biggest followings are showbiz celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. The only politician who makes it into the top 100 (unless you count the Dalai Lama) is Barack Obama, who had 23,363,644 followers the last time I checked.

Given the centrality of Twitter, Obama's numbers must have rankled with Mitt Romney (who currently languishes at 1.77 million followers, a number that is decreasing by the day). During the election campaign, however, something really interesting happened. On Friday 20 July, Obama had 18 million followers, compared with Romney's 690,000. But over the next few days @MittRomney mysteriously acquired 100,000 new?followers.

This immediately attracted the attention of those who track these things. "Is Mitt Romney buying Twitter followers?" asked one prominent observer. Others noted that many of the new "followers" looked dodgy. Five of them shared the same profile photo, for example. Obama supporters gleefully pointed out that buying followers would be absolutely typical of a candidate who was fabulously rich but clueless about cyberspace. Sceptics wondered if the spike was actually orchestrated by Romney's opponents as a way of discrediting him. Was the spike the product of a Twitter "spambot" ? a software robot that creates fake accounts? And so on.

But this was all conjecture and speculation. Everybody was suspicious but nobody knew anything. Then a couple of students at the Oxford Internet Institute asked themselves a question: what's the probability that Romney's new followers are genuine? Their account of the research makes fascinating reading. They started from the empirical observation that fake accounts created by Twitterbots tend to have few or no followers. Then they picked 20 Twitter accounts comparable in size to Obama's and Romney's and examined the statistical properties of the 150,000 newest followers in each. What they were looking for, of course, was the proportion of new followers who had few or zero followers and were therefore likely to be the product of bots. Here's what they found:

"26.9% of Romney's 150,000 newest followers had fewer than two followers. For other accounts of similar size, only 9.6% of new followers had fewer than two followers themselves. The median number of followers for Romney's new followers was five, whereas the median for the comparison group was 27. This represents a stark and statistically significant difference. If you are a statistics nerd, like us, you might want to know that the p-value on this was 0.0000. For the rest of the world, this means that there is, essentially, a 0% chance that the underlying characteristics of Romney's followers are actually the same as the comparison users."

Of course, the Oxford research doesn't answer the really interesting question: who set up the Twitterbot operation? Was it an inept wheeze dreamed up by Romney's people? Or a malicious prank orchestrated by his opponents to discredit him? It just tells us that it was a robotic operation. But it does usefully highlight the kind of analysis that journalists need to be able to do in a networked media environment. Determining what is real?and what is fake is harder in a digital world than it is in meatspace. And it requires mastery of analytical tools as well as possession of the crap-detector that is the time-honoured prerequisite of investigative?journalism.

Egypt presses truce as violence escalates

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Egypt's prime minister rushed to the aid of the Gaza Strip's Hamas rulers Friday in the midst of an Israeli offensive there, calling for an end to the operation, as Palestinian rocket squads aimed at Tel Aviv for a second straight day.

Sirens wailed across Israel's main metropolis moments before an explosion was heard, but police said the rocket appeared to have fallen into the sea.

Israel said it halted its incessant air attacks on militant targets in Gaza during the brief visit of Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil, though Hamas security claimed three airstrikes hit the territory during that period. Militants, meanwhile, fired off more than 60 rockets after Kandil arrived in Gaza.

Kandil toured Gaza City's Shifa Hospital, accompanied by the territory's prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, who was making his first public appearance since Israel's offensive began Wednesday.

In one chaotic moment, a man rushed toward the two leaders, shouting as he held up the body of a 4-year-old boy. The two men cradled the lifeless boy who Hamas said was killed in an Israeli airstrike ? a claim Israel denied.

Fighting to hold back tears, Kandil told reporters that the Israeli operation must end.

"What I saw today in the hospital, the wounded and the martyrs, the boy ... whose blood is still on my hands and clothes, is something that we cannot keep silent about," he said.

Israel vociferously denied carrying out any form of attack in the area since the previous night. The pace of cross-border fighting quickly resumed after the Egyptian leader's departure.

The violence has widened the instability gripping the region, straining already frayed Israel-Egypt relations. The Islamist government in Cairo, like Hamas linked to the region-wide Muslim Brotherhood, recalled its ambassador in protest and dispatched Kandil to show solidarity with Gaza.

Israel, meanwhile, signaled a ground invasion might be imminent, with troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers massing near the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military "continues to strike hard against Hamas and is prepared to expand its action into Gaza," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

The operation began with the assassination of Hamas' military chief and dozens of airstrikes on rocket launching sites. While Israel claims to have inflicted heavy damage, militants have fired hundreds of rockets into southern Israel, bringing the entire region to a standstill.

At least 22 Palestinians, including 12 militants and six children, as well as three Israelis have been killed in three days of fierce fighting.

The 4-year-old boy whose body had been handed to Kandil and Haniyeh was killed along with a young man earlier Friday when an Israeli missile struck close to their homes in the town of Jebaliya near Gaza City, relatives said.

The area near the boy's home showed signs that a projectile had exploded there, with shrapnel marks in the walls of surrounding homes and shattered kitchen windows. But neighbors said security officials quickly took what remained of the projectile, making it impossible to verify who fired it.

Kandil's visit came after a night of fierce exchanges. Overnight, the military said it targeted about 150 rocket-launching sites as well as ammunition warehouses, bringing to 450 the number of sites struck in the three-day operation.

Militants unleashed dozens of rocket barrages overnight, setting off air-raid sirens throughout an area that is home to some 1 million Israelis.

Fighting between the two sides escalated sharply Thursday with a first-ever rocket attack from Gaza on the Tel Aviv area, menacing Israel's most densely populated area. For the attack, they unleashed for the first time the most powerful weapons in their arsenal ? Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets.

No casualties were reported there, but three people died in the country's rocket-scarred south when a projectile slammed into an apartment building.

Early Friday, 85 missiles exploded within 45 minutes in Gaza City, sending black pillars of smoke towering above the coastal strip's largest city. The military said it was targeting underground rocket-launching sites.

One missile flattened sections of the Interior Ministry, leaving a huge pile of rubble. Another hit an uninhabited house belonging to a senior Hamas commander. Those strikes, together with an attack on a generator building near Haniyeh's home, suggested that Israel was expanding its offensive beyond military targets.

Ten-month-old Haneen Tafesh was killed Thursday when flying shrapnel from an air attack on a field next to her family's shack struck her in the head.

"What did she do? Did she fire any rockets?" her 23-year-old father, Khaled Tafesh, asked as he waited outside the Shifa hospital morgue, waiting for the funeral of his only child to begin.

Israel and Hamas had largely observed an informal truce since a devastating Israeli incursion into Gaza four years ago, but rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes on militant operations continued sporadically.

The Israeli offensive has not deterred the militants from firing more than 400 rockets aimed at southern Israel, the military said.

The rocket attacks aimed at Tel Aviv raised the likelihood of a ground incursion. After the two rockets struck close to the city on Thursday, the government approved the mobilization of up to 30,000 reservists.

Those rockets also appear to have landed in the Mediterranean Sea, defense officials said, and another hit an open area on Tel Aviv's southern outskirts. No injuries were reported.

An Israeli ground offensive could be costly to both sides. In the last Gaza war, Israel devastated parts of the territory, setting back Hamas' fighting capabilities but also paying the price of increasing diplomatic isolation because of a civilian death toll numbering in the hundreds.

In the current round of fighting, the civilian casualties have been relatively low and the Israeli strikes seem to be more surgical.
