The weather is getting warmer and you and your pets are probably spending more time outside. In fact, your dog or cat is probably itching to go play and soak in some sun. The problem is, they may be itching when they come back inside too. If you haven?t already, it?s time to start giving your pet flea, tick, and heart-worm preventatives.
Here?s a few creepy facts about fleas:
1: Fleas can live in your lawn, carpeting, and any fabric for several months without food.
2: They can jump about 3 feet high.
3: Fleas not only cause discomfort and itching from biting but they can also transmit diseases and cause allergic reactions in some pets.
4: Fleas consume about 15 times their weight in blood in one day.
5: They are the number cause of allergies in dogs and cats.
If your pet seems to be suffering from allergies and you?re not sure if it?s due to flea bites look for the following signs:
1: Intense itching
2: Skin damage and broken bleeding sores from itching
3: Biting at their skin and fur
4: Licking and irritating their skin
5: Dry flaky skin and loss of fur
Flea allergies can range from mild itching to deep, severe inflammations. Your pet may be allergic to the flea saliva. The best way to prevent discomfort is to prevent fleas from living, biting, and being around your pet.
It?s not always going to be 100% fool proof. The parks, lawns, and places you?ll go may have some fleas that bite your pet but you can minimize the chances by doing the following:
1: Provide your pet with a flea preventative prescription all year.
2: Treat your house, yard, and any other area in your home where fleas may hide and live.
3: Use all the medications and antibiotics prescribed by your vet to treat the allergic reactions.
4: Have your pet checked regularly by a vet.
