About the Book

?

Kiana longs to walk through a forest and feel grass between her toes. But she is the living embodiment of a goddess and has enemies who wish to murder her. Her death will curse the whole of Gettryne. Locked away for protection, she dreams of freedom. Her wish comes true in the worst possible way, when her home and defenders are destroyed. Along with an inexperienced guard and a hunted outcast, Kiana flees the ravages of battle to search for a solution to the madness that has gripped Gettryne for a thousand years. Pursued by the vicious and unrelenting Wolves, their journey will take them far beyond their limits, to a secret that will shake the world.

*****

?Switch clothes.?

Kiana blinked at Finn. It was such a simple order but she couldn?t make her arms move to obey him.

?Now!?

Slowly, Kiana turned to look at her handmaid. Erynn?s eyes were red and puffy, her face smudged with dirt from the tunnel and her blonde hair dishevelled. The girl?s shoulders shook as she pulled the plain brown surcoat over her head and held it out to Kiana. Like Kiana, she also wore an undyed woollen underdress that preserved modesty. Kiana stared at the surcoat and then at Erynn. Her lower lip trembled and a lump formed in her throat that threatened to choke her.

?Now, Kiana!? Finn kept glancing towards Ciall, who was standing at the tunnel entrance.

Sunlight filtered in, providing enough light to see by deeper in the tunnel. Kiana could hear the sounds of fighting in the distance. Swords clanged against each other, feet thundered over wood and men screamed. She clamped her hands over her ears and sank down so that she was crouching.

Finn was shouting at her. Kiana shook her head and squeezed her eyes tightly shut. She wouldn?t listen. How could he ask her to send Erynn out to die?

A pair of hands closed over hers and pulled them away from her ears.

?Kiana.?

Kiana couldn?t immediately put a name to the gentle voice. Slowly, she opened her eyes. Nidan was crouching in front of her, eyes alert, body tense, but there was a kindness in his face.

?We don?t have time to think,? he said. ?You need to do as Finn says.?

?But??

?Don?t think.? He was right. ?You have to live.?

Right again. She stood and pulled her surcoat off with numb fingers. Erynn helped her into the rough wool garment. It irritated the nape of her neck. It doesn?t matter! She watched as Erynn pulled on the golden surcoat. Kiana had always wondered why she and Erynn looked so alike. Now it was clear: Erynn was the perfect decoy. Kiana shivered violently. Her stomach lurched. She turned away and threw up. Once she had recovered, Nidan offered her a scrap of cloth. She cleaned her mouth and then managed to force a grateful smile to her lips.

?We split into two groups,? Finn said. ?Bran and Coran will take Erynn.? He looked at Nidan. ?You?re with me and Ciall.?

Kiana had enough wits to see Nidan?s eyebrows raise as his mouth dropped open. Under different circumstances, his expression might have been comical.

?Let?s go!?

She forced herself to follow Finn out of the tunnel, expecting to see Wolves at any moment.

Finn must have sensed Kiana?s nervousness. He paused and glanced at her. ?From what we could see, the Wolves are concentrated around the moat. It?s unlikely they?ll find this entrance.?

Kiana nodded. They had run through the tunnel for what felt like an eternity, and the fighting sounded so distant. Despite Finn?s assurances, Kiana stared after the other group as they vanished into the forest. They had to stay safe. They had to.

*****

Now,lets welcome Clare Davidson, who is going to?share something really cool with us.

The Night Before the Assault

I thought I'd share a short scene that takes place before the opening chapter of Trinity: The camp was quiet. The Wolves hadn't lit any fires?it was too much of a risk. Skaric lay on a rough blanket, staring up at the night sky. A blanket of stars spread above the camp, the only witnesses to the Wolves' presence at the edge of the forest. Inside was Blackoak Tower, allegedly the home of the incarnation of Miale. Skaric didn't need to see Vali to recognise his friend. He tucked his hands beneath his head. "I'd rather be on watch." Vali chuckled. His bedroll plopped to the floor beside Skaric and he absently kicked it out. "We're far too important to waste our energy on watch, Skaric," he said in a mocking tone. "Do you think we really will find the Miale bitch in that tower?" Skaric shrugged. "That's what we've been told." Vali stretched out on his side, propping himself up on his elbow so he could face Skaric. "People lie? even under torture." Neither of them had been present. They hadn't seen the man's face or heard his words. Only Berend had. "The war leader doesn't do anything that has the potential to make him look bad." Skaric kept his voice low. "Berend must be sure she's there." The name tangled on his tongue and left a bad taste in his mouth. It was no secret that they didn't get along. A smile spread across Skaric's lips. "We'll know." Vali flopped onto his back. "Oh yes. Her telltale amber eyes. What if that's just a myth?" "You're very pessimistic tonight," Skaric chuckled. "It's a fact that's been handed down from Alpha to Alpha for a thousand years. It's true." He felt the strength of his conviction in his words. "A god cannot inhabit a mortal body without leaving a physical mark." He closed his eyes, allowing the subdued sounds of the camp to wash over him. Hushed voices chatted in scattered clusters. Horses snorted and swished their tails. Leather creaked under the pressure of heavy-handed polishing. The stench of unwashed men and horse dung made the air in the camp uncomfortable to breathe. Tension filled the air, carried by anxious whispers and unseen stares.? "At least Berend is the one who'll face your father's wrath if this is a waste of time," Vali said. Tension coiled in the pit of Skaric's stomach. He opened his eyes. The sky seemed even blacker, the stars more accusing. "We won't fail," Skaric snapped. They couldn't. He rolled over, turning his back on Vali. "Get some sleep."

He held his breath for several heartbeats until Vali's grumbling and shuffling subsided. He tugged his blanket around his shoulders, but still shivered. He would be glad when the assault was over, no matter what the outcome.

ICAP promises to "raise the bar" on listings

LONDON (Reuters) - The chief executive of a London-based stock market launched on Wednesday by ICAP wants companies listed on his exchange to meet higher standards of disclosure and governance or face being forced off the market.

Seth Johnson, the chief executive of the ICAP Securities and Derivatives Exchange (ISDX), said he planned to introduce a "points scoring system" next year that would help establish if firms were suitable for listing.

"We are raising the bar for companies listed on the exchange. The 133 companies already listed will have time to pull their socks up. If they don't, they'll be forced to leave," said Johnson.

ISDX is the new name for the PLUS-SX stock market that ICAP bought in June for 500,000 pounds, a move that saw the world's largest derivatives broker taking ownership of a British stock exchange licence for the first time.

Johnson said on Wednesday he expected to set the precise disclosure, corporate governance and financial criteria for listed companies early next year and he wanted to give firms "at least a year" to comply with the new requirements.

He also said ISDX should offer traders deeper and more active trading than its predecessor PLUS-SX because two large British brokers -- Peel Hunt and Shore Capital -- have signed up to support trading in the larger companies on the market.

The derivatives broker, which trades largely in the over-the-counter (OTC) market, sees ISDX as strategically important. Global regulators are seeking to force more of the vast OTC swaps market to use exchanges and authorities in Europe want to open up the futures markets to competition.

"From a group perspective ISDX is a strategic asset. We haven't got a timeline for listed derivatives but we will be looking at this in the coming months," Johnson said.

NYSE Euronext's Liffe and Deutsche Boerse's Eurex are the main European futures markets but they face competition from ICAP as well as the CME Group and Nasdaq OMX, which are planning exchanges next year. ($1 = 0.6218 British pounds)

Russian punk band "risk lives" in Soviet-style prisons

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two women from punk band Pussy Riot sentenced to jail for an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral face harsh, Soviet-style prison camps where their lives may be in danger due to a lack of medicine and no hot water amid sub-zero winter temperatures, according to a recently released band member.

Pussy Riot's protest has attracted global attention because of the two-year jail sentences meted out to its members for what prosecutors called "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred".

Opposition figures say the punishments formed part of a wave of repression against opponents of President Vladimir Putin, now in his 13th year ruling Russia.

Putin said last Thursday that the women "deserved what they got" because their punk prayer in Moscow's main cathedral last February, during which the balaclava-clad women appealed to the Virgin Mary to get rid of the president, amounted to "group sex" and threatened the moral foundations of Russia.

Yekaterina Samutsevich, the third member of Pussy Riot who was released from jail earlier this month after her sentence was suspended on appeal, spoke to Reuters in an interview about the prison camp in Mordovia, about 300 miles southeast of Moscow where her colleague Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been sent to serve her sentence.

She said its conditions recalled the Soviet era.

"There is no hot water in Mordovia and there are only special prison clothes given out which are very cold for the weather," said Samutsevich.

"THEY CAN DIE"

"There is no medicine. In Soviet times they thought that if people fell ill, that was their own problem ... if someone gets sick and nobody helps them, they can die - unfortunately there have been such cases and they happen periodically."

The other jailed group member, Maria Alyokhina, is bound for a prison camp in the Urals city of Perm, a location used to jail political prisoners in the Soviet era. She has not yet arrived.

Samutsevich, a small, intense 30-year-old who has worked as a computer programmer, gave the interview in a small McDonald's in a town just outside Moscow because of concerns about her security.

The first part of the interview was filmed and took place outside in a howling cold wind because the restaurant would not allow TV cameras inside.

Samutsevich predicted that Putin's government would in the end fall victim to mass unrest and said the clampdown on dissent now under way in Russia showed just how scared the Kremlin was.

"The system itself is crumbling," she said. "It's becoming more repressive ... those in power have very strong fears and their behaviour is more and more wild. We could end with a total collapse like the Soviet Union."

Putin is now starting a fresh six-year term, having won a presidential election in March with 63.6 percent of the vote. Opponents said the Kremlin's dominance over mass media, obstacles placed in the way of the opposition, ballot-stuffing and the extensive use of government resources to garner support for Putin meant the vote was not free or fair.

Samutsevich said Pussy Riot's top priority now was to campaign to free the band's two imprisoned members and it would call on other members for help.

"The band doesn't consist just of the three of us," she said. "There's more, way more people, around 20 members in the band."

Putin, she said, was trying to present the sentences against the band members as "some kind of ordinary court case for an ordinary criminal charge. But this is totally wrong and he is not succeeding".

POPULAR HOSTILITY

Polls have shown that in Russia's predominantly conservative society, where Orthodox Christian believers are a majority, most citizens approve of the jail terms for Pussy Riot and dislike their actions. More than 40 percent in a recent poll said the women's prison terms should have been longer.

Asked about popular hostility to the band, Samutsevich said the Kremlin had used its control of state television channels to present a distorted picture of Pussy Riot.

This obscured the band's real purpose and its political protest message. Instead, official media emphasised constantly that the group were anti-religious blasphemers.

Viewers, she said, "didn't see us, they didn't hear us because the federal TV channels have done their best to cut out our speech. They would cut all the episodes from the video (of Pussy Riot performing in the cathedral) where you could hear the lyrics of the songs. And when people hear the lyrics, they immediately understand the purpose of our action."

Opposition figures have pointed to the irony of Putin, a former KGB spy, speaking solemnly of the sanctity of religion in a country where, for decades, the Soviet Communist Party - which the Kremlin chief served for decades in his KGB role - repressed all forms of religious expression.

Pussy Riot's protest song began with the phrase "Virgin Mary, Mother of God, banish Putin, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, banish him, we pray thee".

Combining Social Media And Product Creation ? How To Do This ...

Those that have Internet businesses are aware of how fast inaccurate information can spread, despite the vastness of the Internet and all that it has to offer. It doesn?t matter why it happens. If you are new to Internet marketing, this can severely impair you. Try not to be too enthusiastic if you are new, and show a little restraint. For instance, if you read a sales letter, and it makes you want to buy it automatically, this is where you need to think twice. Marketing forums can be great places to find the truth about many things in IM.

It is a good idea to start doing this type of business in an area where you are the most comfortable ? the place where you currently reside. It is easy to start doing this. All you have to do is contact professionals and ask them for an interview in the near future. If you can find someone that is in your particular niche, this is ideal. At least find someone that you know. A conversation with this person is very easy to do for video interviews if you go that route. Once you are done with your interviews, compile a product just for your audience based upon this niche. The person or people you interview will get some exposure and that is how they win in this deal.

Those that need timely critical information are probably great prospects for selling a product to. Again, the mega-list product is the focus, creating a product that explains information to people that are searching for something specific. In this product, you can be very specific, targeting individual marketers and small businesses on the Internet.

You now know what to sell to these newbies. It is important to now discuss how you can market to them and what strategies to use. Many people use webinars to market to newbies, something that is unique in that many people are doing more and more today. As you probably know, many online marketers make thousands of dollars off of newbies with this one method. You need a webinar, and of course, newbies to attend it. You can entice them very easily because they are new, and almost any information is something they will be receptive to. Be sure that the information is correct and usable, otherwise, if you don?t deliver on your promises, this could backfire on you.

As is obvious, our models included targeted beginners in various niches, or any niche. Let?s say that you start focusing on Internet marketing, you can offer your device as to what you know to this select group. You can up your game a little bit and go after more advanced niche markets. The only caveat is that your information has to be something of exceptional value.

Really tough to when you wish? 99% of the time it is exactly about digital camera reviews.

The changing microflora of bacteria in the lungs

Any part of the human body that is open to the outside world it available for the colonisation of bacteria. While this blog has covered bacteria in the gut, the vagina and the throat, one area I?ve neglected to cover is the bacteria that get into the lungs. As the company I currently work for is involved in respiratory research I was rather excited to find a PLoS One paper that looked at how the population of lung bacteria changes in respiratory disease.

The respiratory disease in question is COPD, which stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. It?s caused primarily by smoke getting into the lungs, from tobacco or industrial processes, and leads to narrowed airways and overproduction of mucus. It?s not really curable, although many medications exist to help people live with it, and to slow down the progression of the disease.

Healthy lung and a lung with COPD - from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, credit below.

In order to explore which bacteria were present in healthy smokers, COPD patients, and people who had never smoked, researchers used massively parallel pyrosequencing. This technique allows the bacteria to be identified by their DNA without the need for producing bacterial cultures, so even ?unculturable? bacteria can be identified.

In the smokers, never-smoked, and patients with mild COPD a far wider range of bacterial diversity was found than in patients with severe COPD who tended to have a much smaller number of different bacterial species. There were no specific bacterial species common for each group, the major difference appeared to be in diversity. The most commonly found bacteria in the healthy subjects included?Pseudomonas,?Streptococcus,?Prevotella and Fusobacterium which the researchers suggested may make up a core lung microbiome.

As a secondary analysis, the researchers also looked at bacterial populations in very specific areas of the lung, and found that there was no homology of bacterial species throughout the whole lung. In some cases one small microenvironment in the lung could be exclusively populated by one form of bacteria. Samples from different places in the lungs could therefore result in a very different view of the bacterial microflora in the lungs.

Although this research is fascinating, it is important to note that despite?differences?seen the microflora cannot be used as a diagnostic for COPD as there were no exclusive differences seen in this small sample size between diseased and healthy lung flora. The small patches of different microflora may suggest areas that are more prone to developing COPD and other respiratory diseases, in the same way that patches of different skin bacterial flora can be more prone to?dermatitis?and skin diseases.

Explosion strikes north Nigeria Catholic church

KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber detonated his explosives Sunday at a Catholic church holding Mass in northern Nigeria, injuring a number of worshippers, officials and witnesses said.

The attack happened in the Malali neighborhood of Kaduna, a city on the dividing line between Nigeria's largely Christian south and Muslim north where religious rioting has killed hundreds in recent years. The car tried to force its way past the gate at St. Rita's Catholic church just before it exploded, witnesses at the church said.

Yushua Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, also said initial information suggested the attack was by a suicide bomber in a car. He said "a number of casualties" had been taken to local hospitals, but could not give a specific number.

Police officers and soldiers surrounded the site of the blast. Security officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as the Muslims in the nation are celebrating the Eid al-Adha holiday in Nigeria. In recent days, rumors have circulated that the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for hundreds of killings this year alone, might try to launch an attack during the holiday. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country. However, the group, which speaks to journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

After the April 2011 presidential election, protests in Kaduna over Christian Goodluck Jonathan winning quickly turned into ethnic and religious violence that saw hundreds killed in that state alone.

Secrecy surrounds Ukrainian president's home

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? When Ukraine's president opened up his home to TV cameras, he presented a cozy place with a small office just big enough for his grandchildren to play in. But his critics point to strong evidence he actually lives in very different digs: a luxurious, marble-columned mansion with a golf course, a helipad and even an ostrich enclosure.

The reported grandeur is becoming a campaign issue in a country quickly getting fed up with widespread corruption. Critics call Viktor Yanukovych's home an emblem of the secrecy and arrogance that defines his presidency, painting him as a leader who basks in splendor while his main political opponent, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, is locked up in prison on charges the West has called politically motivated.

Yanukovych has refused to answer questions about the house or the vast park where it sits, once darkly suggesting that an investigative journalist back off. An opposition activist looking for answers broke into the property James Bond-style, scaling the walls with a tow rope. She was detained, but still managed to salvage photographs of a golf course and glitzy buildings, describing an opulent palace guarded by heavy security.

Political commentator Vitaly Portnikov, who has compared Yanukovych's government to a "mafia" jeopardizing Ukraine's desire for greater integration with the European Union, cited Yanukovych's clandestine residence as an example of the corruption and lack of transparency unacceptable in the West.

"Viktor Yanukovych's main goal is not to be the president of Ukraine but to be the No. 1 oligarch in Ukraine," said Portnikov. "He fought for power ... specifically in order to consolidate in his hands a huge amount of resources and property, in order to make his family the first family in the country."

The two main opposition parties are likely to gain ground in Sunday's parliamentary election. But with the pro-Western opposition's charismatic leader in jail and a lack of unity among government critics, the president's Party of Regions is expected to retain its majority in Parliament.

Yanukovych, who returned to power in 2010 after a period out of office, maintains a strong core of support, especially in the Russian-leaning east and south of the country, claiming credit for bringing stability after years of paralyzing political infighting and economic free-fall.

But his democracy and reform record is poor. TV channels, the main source of information for Ukrainians, are controlled by tycoons loyal to the government and they give little airtime to the opposition. Investors complain of being stripped of their companies through unfair legal action brought by government-friendly businessmen. And Ukrainians are angry over perks and unfair treatment for VIPs: Officials and their friends routinely run red lights or avoid traffic by driving the wrong way. In one case that sparked national protests, two of three suspects in the brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl were initially released ? because of their connections to local officials, activists say.

Yanukovych's home is in Mezhygirya park, 140 hectares (345 acres) of forested hills situated along the Dnipro River, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Kiev, the capital. Founded decades ago on the ashes of an Orthodox Christian monastery, the park included a government residence for top Communist Party bosses like Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, and is off limits to the public.

Through a series of controversial government acts, Yanukovych was able to privatize a modest house on a 1.8-hectare (4.4-acre) plot of land inside the park. After that, two firms were allowed to lease the park from the government for 49 years. They demolished most of the Soviet-era buildings, including the government residence, and began construction of new houses and sports clubs.

Yanukovych has refused to say who is behind the two firms, but his critics have no doubts.

Mezhygirya is "a symbol of the president's inappropriate desire for luxury, the unknown source of his wealth and the desire to hide it all behind dummy firms," said Serhiy Leshchenko, a journalist with the Ukrainska Pravda news site whose investigation has linked the two firms to Yanukovych and his family.

Seeking to counter criticism, Yanukovych invited six trusted journalists to Mezhygirya in the summer of 2011 and gave them a tour of his official house. He led the men into his bedroom, where an Orthodox Christian icon stood on a bedside table, and then his small office, where he lets his grandchildren play while he works. He also showed them a fireplace in the living room he said he had to abandon because a family of owls had settled inside.

But ownership documents for the two firms uncovered by Leshchenko link them to Yanukovych and his allies and bolster claims that he controls the entire estate. Aerial photos taken by the Korrespondent weekly magazine show that the property appears to be one entity, complete with a giant mansion, fruit and vegetable greenhouses and an array of sports facilities. Journalists who have tried to get into the park or even a nearby village have been stopped by government security agents.

Investigative journalist Tetyana Chernovil scaled the 5-meter (16.5-foot) fence with a rope and a wooden plank, spending about three hours inside before getting caught by security guards with barking dogs. She was able to see the ostriches and photograph the golf club, a large barge made of rare red wood and plated with gold, and other buildings, before being released after several hours of questioning.

Chernovil, who is running for parliament on the opposition ticket, questions the source of all this luxury given that Yanukovych's official annual salary is about $115,000 a year. She is infuriated at the lavish spending in a country where some rural schools still have no indoor plumbing.

When "small kids are forced to run to the toilet outside in the winter, how can a president allow himself to . build these helicopter pads, which only he needs, which no one else uses?," she asked.

BBC scandal raises questions for incoming NYT boss

LONDON (AP) ? The child abuse scandal that has enveloped one of Britain's most respected news organizations is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC.

Mark Thompson was in charge of the BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Jimmy Savile, one of its biggest stars, was a serial sex offender.

The BBC scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, a popular children's television presenter, cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises. He is also alleged to have sexually assaulted disabled children at hospitals that he helped by raising charity funds.

Police say there could be more than 200 victims, leading one child protection charity to say that Savile could rank among Britain's most prolific child sex predators.

In a sign of how the scandal may spread, the BBC said Tuesday it was looking into claims of sexual abuse and harassment against nine other current and former employees and contributors.

As increasing numbers of BBC executives come under the microscope over what they knew about Savile ? and why the posthumous expose about his sexual crimes was blocked from being broadcast ? Thompson is being quizzed about his role as well.

Thompson, 55, was the BBC director-general from 2004 until last month.

In a letter to Conservative lawmaker Rob Wilson, Thompson laid out his defense, saying he never worked with Savile, never worked on any of the entertainer's programs and indeed never met the man. Referring to the increasing number of BBC employees who have come forward to say that Savile's interest in young girls was widely rumored, Thompson said he had never been aware of the whispers.

"If I had, I would have raised them with senior colleagues and contacted the police," said Thompson.

The controversy over Saville was compounded when it emerged that an investigation into his misdeeds by the BBC's own "Newsnight" program was shelved last year only weeks before the broadcaster aired a glowing holiday tribute show to Savile.

Now journalists and lawmakers are asking whether BBC bosses canned the "Newsnight" show to protect their star, a prodigious charity fundraiser who was widely eulogized following his death last year at age 84.

The corporation denies a cover-up, although "Newsnight" editor Peter Rippon recently stepped down as the BBC's internal investigation got under way. After weeks of standing by Rippon, the BBC has said his explanation about why the Savile show was not broadcast was incomplete and inaccurate.

With Thompson about to move from one of the most important jobs in the British media to one of most important jobs in American journalism, exactly what he knew ? and when he knew it ?could be critical to his future career.

In a statement last week, Thompson said he had "never heard any allegations or received any complaints" about Savile during his tenure.

But an Oct. 7 story by London's Sunday Times appeared to contradict him, reporting that a BBC journalist had tipped Thompson off about the Savile investigation.

The Sunday Times is published by News International, an arm of Rupert Murdoch's global News Corp. empire, and has no corporate ties to The New York Times.

Thompson acknowledged being warned about what was happening at "Newsnight" by a BBC journalist during a company cocktail party late last year, but he said the journalist never "set out what allegations 'Newsnight' were investigating or had been investigating."

Thompson said he followed the matter up with other executives who told him the "Newsnight" investigation was canceled for journalistic reasons ? suggesting that they believed there wasn't enough evidence for an expose on Savile.

"I had no reason to believe that anyone in the BBC was withholding controversial or incriminating material," Thompson wrote in his letter to Wilson, the lawmaker.

Wilson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he has written to Thompson again seeking more answers.

"There are questions about how much the journalist told him about the 'Newsnight' investigation that need to be cleared up as quickly as possible," Wilson said, adding that Thompson said he is willing to answer questions before the U.K. parliamentary committee looking into the matter and the BBC's own inquiry.

Wilson said Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief depends on the outcome of the various inquiries.

But The New York Times has already waited months for a new permanent chief executive following the resignation of Janet Robinson last December. One analyst said the paper could ill afford to wait any longer.

"My feeling is if he (Thompson) has no 'problem' that could surface in the near future there would be no need for him to delay," said Edward Atorino, an analyst with The Benchmark Company. "If there is an issue he should withdraw."

The controversy drew the attention of The New York Times' public editor, Margaret Sullivan, who on Tuesday asked Times readers to evaluate the incoming chief's answers.

"How likely is it that he knew nothing?" she asked. "A director general of a giant media company is something like a newspaper's publisher. Would a publisher be very likely to know if an investigation of one of its own people on sexual abuse charges had been killed?"

In a carefully worded paragraph that followed, she raised the issue of Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief.

"His integrity and decision-making are bound to affect The Times and its journalism ? profoundly," she wrote. "It's worth considering now whether he is the right person for the job, given this turn of events."

Sullivan said while finding an answer was "not as easy as it sounds ... all these questions ought to be asked."

Sullivan's office said Wednesday she would not be elaborating on her post.

A call and an email to The New York Times seeking comment were not immediately returned Wednesday.
