auto insurance: Obtaining Car Loans With Bad Credit Does Not Rely ...

The challenge when buying a new car with low credit score ratings is made a little easier when a down transaction is provided as part of the purchase cope - or at least that is what is often stated. A down transaction when looking for car loans with poor credit score would reduce the loan size. But it is not real.

The truth is there is no problem with obtaining loan acceptance with no down transaction. Actually, there is no situation where a one time is required, and most traders have hidden purposes when telling clients that a down transaction is needed. This is the trick that so many people are taken in by, and one that can see them 100's of dollars more than they have to.

There are some simple points that should be known before accepting a car loan. This way, the individual is in a stronger position to settle the best possible conditions. Here are just 3 pointers.

Car Funding Is For Mark-Up

Car traders are symbolic of double dealing, and cheap shots, and their reputation is well earned. When clients are looking for car loans with poor credit score, the supplier will contact the fund organization on their behalf and apply for the fund cope. And, they will secure the lowest possible interest amount.

That seems fine but if the fund organization offers fund at a amount of 9.5%, then the traders will increase that to 11.5%, pocketing the difference with each transaction.

What is more, traders tell their clients that acceptance with no down transaction is difficult because of their poor credit score status. Usually, they explain that the down transaction reduces the car loan sum and, therefore, the repayments. This is not real at all, with down expenses usually placed in the banking account of the supplier, and the financing cope set at 9.5% to make it seem as though a discount is properly secured.

Down Payment is Not Obligatory

A typical declare is that down expenses are essential, in the same way that mortgage provider usually only allow a maximum 90% financing cope. This is basically not real for car financing, and a 100% car loan with poor credit score is perfectly acceptable.

In reality, it is not even necessary to get financing through the car traders, and instead a loan can be properly secured from a financial institution or other loan organization.
So, instead of the 11.5% the traders declare must be paid, a more competitive 10% might be charged, even with poor credit score. Getting the car loan is essential for many of us looking for a new car, but the right conditions are important too.

Pre-Approved Loans

The best strategy to obtaining a car loan with poor credit score is to be pre-approved by a financial institution or online lender before going to the car supplier. This then gives the customer the power in discussions. They do not need to work out financing conditions with the traders but can basically tell the supplier what car they want and at what price.

Young cancer survivor becomes top junior golfer

AUG. 5, 2013

12-year-old helps raise money for leukemia research, treatment

BY ROBERT DICKS

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital description of photo

Leukemia survivor Grace Chen helped establish a nonprofit association that raises money for leukemia research through golf-related activities.

"It's a relief that I can do what other kids do."

Grace Chen, 12, of Sunnyvale, Calif., was discussing how, since recovering from childhood leukemia, she can go to school, hang out with friends, watch TV ? basically have a normal life. Well, mostly normal. There aren't many other girls her age who can hit a golf ball 230 yards.

With 25 trophies scattered around her house, it's obvious that Grace has the whole golf thing down. It's been that way since she was 6 and in recovery from years of treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia, or ALL, at the Bass Center for Cancer and Childhood Blood Diseases at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

"My wife, Ni, and I wanted her to start doing something that would help her physically and mentally," said Grace's father, Weixing Chen. "Team sports weren't best because of the requirements for physical activity and the possibility of germs spreading between kids. So we figured golf ? with open, fresh air and beautiful settings ? would be right for her, and she could do it at her own pace and get good exercise."

Golf quickly became something more than just exercise. When Grace was just 7, she won five medals in five categories in a national competition. Recently, she made her fifth annual trip to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst, N.C. Gary Dahl, MD, a physician at Packard Children's, is not surprised.

"Grace represents a very important trend in leukemia treatments," said Dahl, who also is a professor of pediatric hematology and oncology at the School of Medicine. "In the early 1960s, before chemotherapy was used, only about 3 percent of patients like Grace were long-term survivors. But in the late '60s and through the '70s, we made major inroads in treatment. ALL now has a cure rate of around 90 percent, and other types, such as acute myeloid leukemia, have improved to rates of 65 percent."

Grace's Birdie for ALL team, a group of junior Bay Area golfers, is part of her Gracious Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 2009 to raise awareness of childhood leukemia diseases and research. Birdie for ALL has supporters throughout the Bay Area who donate money for every birdie or better made by Grace and other team members. The group also hosts fundraising activities and holds golf-related events at Packard Children's, Ronald McDonald House at Stanford and Camp Okizu, a camp for children with cancer.

To date, Birdie for ALL has donated more than $6,000 to fund leukemia research and treatment at Stanford. In recognition of her efforts, Grace was named recipient of 2012 Peggy Kirk Bell award at last year's U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. Named after the women's golf pioneer, the award is given to a young golfer who is making a difference in his or her community.

Leukemia, a cancer of the blood that starts in the bone marrow, is the most common childhood cancer. It hit Grace hard at age 2. She was temporarily living in China with her grandparents while her parents, who were working in the Bay Area, flew back and forth. Her symptoms, including joint pain, fever and anemia, were classic. With a confirmed diagnosis, she flew to the Bay Area for treatment and came straight to Packard Children's from the airport.

"Grace couldn't speak English, and she was very frightened," Weixing said. "Once Dr. Dahl laid out the plan, she started receiving chemotherapy and dealing with all the side effects."

For Grace, the treatments and diagnostics could be unpleasant, especially the painful bone marrow aspirations to check the status of her blood cells. "I can't remember too much," said Grace, "but I remember the therapy, including the shots and then the ice cream afterward. I'm just really thankful to now be healthy."

With personal heroes like gold stars Yani Tseng and Phil Mickelson, is Grace envisioning a pro career? "I hope to play in high school, and my college dream is to go to Stanford, Princeton, Harvard or UCLA," Grace said. "For now, I think I want to wait and see how things go, but I do know one thing. I feel like golf has played a large role in helping me recover."

UPDATE 2-Obama administration overturns ban on some iPad, iPhones

Sat Aug 3, 2013 11:22pm BST

By Diane Bartz and Ayesha Rascoe

WASHINGTON Aug 3 (Reuters) - The Obama administration has overturned a U.S. trade panel's ban on the sale of some older iPhones and iPads, reversing a ruling that had favored Samsung Electronics Co Ltd over Apple Inc in their long-running patent battles.

The U.S. International Trade Commission in June banned the import or sale of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G distributed by AT&T Inc, saying the devices infringed a patent owned by the South Korean electronics giant.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman on Saturday vetoed the ban, saying his decision was in part based on its "effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers." He said Samsung could continue to pursue its case through the courts.

Samsung said it was "disappointed" at the lifting of the ban. "The ITC's decision correctly recognized that Samsung has been negotiating in good faith and that Apple remains unwilling to take a license," it said in a statement.

Apple welcomed the news and applauded the administration "for standing up for innovation." It added, "Samsung was wrong to abuse the patent system in this way."

The Apple products targeted by the ITC ban are more than a year old, though some models such as the iPhone 4 remain solid sellers. Apple sells more than 100 million iPhones annually, but it does not break down sales by models.

Apple and Samsung have been waging a global patent war since 2010, filing multiple lawsuits against each other over the design and functionality of their devices.

This ITC ban is specific to a Samsung patent on technology that allows devices to transmit multiple services simultaneously and correctly through 3G wireless technology.

Such patents are called "standard essential patents" and they cover technology that must be used to comply with standards set by industry organizations.

The Obama administration has been pressing for most infringements of standard essential patents to be punished by monetary fines instead of sales injunctions.

Froman on Saturday said the ITC should thoroughly examine the public interest ramifications of its rulings in disputes over standard essential patents.

Designed to be a trade panel, the ITC has become a popular venue for patent lawsuits because it acts relatively quickly and can order import bans, which are more difficult to get from district courts.

While the ITC was created to ensure that U.S. companies can compete fairly against imports, a number of foreign companies with U.S. manufacturing plants have filed patent complaints with the agency. Samsung has a plant in Austin, Texas.

ITC cases can be appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and from there to the Supreme Court.

Apple has a parallel complaint filed against Samsung at the ITC, accusing the South Korean company of copying the iPhone and iPad. An ITC judge in that case found that Samsung had violated one patent but not a second one. A final decision is due in August.

Samsung makes phones that run on Google Inc's Android operating software, the market leader. Apple has also sued other Android phone makers including HTC Corp for patent infringement.

The case at the International Trade Commission was No. 337-794.

Time Warner Cable drops CBS in NY, LA, Dallas

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Three million Time Warner Cable customers in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and elsewhere lost access to CBS programming on multiple channels Friday as the cable provider dropped the network in a dispute over fees.

The nation's second largest cable operator said that CBS refused to have productive discussions despite a monthlong extension of talks since a previous deal expired at the end of June.

CBS said it regrets Time Warner Cable's decision, which it called "ill-advised."

As of about 2:15 p.m. Pacific time, multiple stations that carry CBS programming in New York and Los Angeles were replaced with a message from Time Warner Cable, saying that CBS had "demanded an outrageous increase" in the fees it demands to carry the signal of its TV stations.

Time Warner Cable subscribers in other markets were also affected.

In all, the stations affected are WCBS and WLNY in New York; KCBS and KCAL in Los Angeles; KTVT and KTXA in Dallas; WBZ and WSBK in Boston; KDKA, WPCW-CW in Pittsburgh; KCNC in Denver; WKBD-CW in Detroit and WBBM in Chicago.

Time Warner Cable customers who subscribe to Showtime, TMC, FLIX and Smithsonian channels were also to lose programming.

In its message to subscribers, Time Warner Cable said it would replace the lost programming with shows from Starz Kids and Family temporarily.

Jenna Coleman and boyfriend Richard Madden enjoy time off with sunny London stroll

And it looks as though Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman and her Game Of Thrones star boyfriend Richard Madden are making the most of their short time off together in London.

The pair were spotted taking a leisurely stroll in the capital yesterday afternoon, wandering around Primrose Hill hand in hand and making the most of the sunny weather.

Jenna looked effortlessly chic in a navy patterned maxi dress which featured a high neck and billowing bottom half, while her actor beau kept things casual in a pair of jeans, a T-shirt and a khaki jacket.

Jenna - who rose to fame as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale in 2005 - added a pair of stylish sunglasses to her outfit and some gold flip flops. She held a navy jacket in her hand too as she enjoyed her boyfriend's company.

The pair returned to the UK on Friday after appearing at San Diego's Comic Con last week.

The couple met in Budapest, Hungary, in 2011 when Jenna was filming ITV1 mini-series Titanic, and Richard was working on the BBC drama Birdsong.

However, the star recently admitted that she was "shy" around men and had never been on a date in her life.

Speaking to the Radio Times magazine, she said: "I?d never been on a date in my life ever because the idea of just being sat with one person...

"I think it was going from eight people in a tiny, tiny school to being surrounded by loads of people. I shrank away, surrounded myself with quite loud friends.

"I?ve got a lot better as I?ve got older. If I?m with a group of people I?m okay, but actually I?m quite a nervous person if I?m just one-to-one with somebody."

Meanwhile, the star has teased that Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special all be a "transformation episode."

She told Access Hollywood: "The whole episode is a massive celebration and it's kind of about celebrating the last 50 years of Doctor Who, with a massive team of us all thrown in there, but it's quite a transformation episode and it very much changes the direction of where the show is going in quite a big way.

"It's in the can and all the 3D and effects and everything like that is taking place as we speak," she said of the episode, which will air on November 23.

(AP) ? A year after her breakout performance at the Olympics, Ruta Meilutyte is even faster than before.

The 16-year-old Lithuanian set a meet record in morning heats of the 100-meter breaststroke at the world championships Monday with a quicker swim than the ones that got her gold in London.

Meilutyte hit the wall in 1 minute, 4.52 seconds, Jessica Hardy of the United States was second in 1:05.18 and Yuliya Efimova of Russia touched third in 1:05.24.

At the Olympics, Meilutyte won in 1:05.47, although she swam faster in the semifinals at 1:05.21.

If she swims just 0.08 quicker in the semifinals later or in Tuesday's final, she'll break Hardy's world record of 1:04.45 set in 2009 at the height of the rubberized suit era.

No change: Russia won't extradite Snowden to US

MOSCOW (AP) ? A spokesman for President Vladimir Putin says Russia has not budged from its refusal to extradite U.S. leaker Edward Snowden, who has applied for asylum.

Snowden, who is believed to have been staying at the Moscow airport transit zone since June 23, applied for temporary asylum in Russia last week. The United States wants him sent home to face prosecution for espionage.

Asked by a reporter whether the government's position had changed, Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies that "Russia has never extradited anyone and never will." There is no U.S.-Russia extradition treaty.

Peskov also said that Putin is not involved in reviewing Snowden's application or discussions of the ex-NSA contractor's future with the U.S., though the Russian Security Service, the FSB, had been in touch with the FBI.

Big Ten football media day: Purdue?s Hazell leans on Big Ten experience

CHICAGO, Ill. ? In his initial team meeting after being named the head coach at Purdue on Dec. 5, Darrell Hazell challenged his team for the first time.

?Purdue is always a team perceived in the middle of the Big Ten,? said Hazell, who came from Kent State. ?Never up here or down there. It?s going to take a lot of work, but we?re going to climb ourselves out of the middle.?

The Boilermakers have had a winning Big Ten record just once over the last nine seasons, a 5-3 mark in 2006.

Hazell knows the Big Ten landscape from his seven seasons on Jim Tressel?s staff at Ohio State.

?Coach Tressel was a big influence on me,? Hazell said. ?The great decisions he made on game day, when the bullets are flying. I learned a lot from Jim Tressel.?

NFL rookie rescues woman, kids from burning car

Jonathan Willard signs with the Titans as an undrafted free agent after the NFL draft.

Uncredited/ASSOCIATED PRESS

Jonathan Willard signs with the Titans as an undrafted free agent after the NFL draft.

There?s one thing undrafted rookie Jonathan Willard won?t have to prove to the Titans at training camp this week ? his character.

Willard put himself directly in harm?s way on Tuesday, coming to the aid of a complete stranger whose car had caught fire on Interstate 40 between Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn.

?I saw this car in front of me, and it had all kinds of black smoke coming out of it,? Willard, a former Clemson standout, told TigerNet.com, a Clemson-centric website, Tuesday. ?I tried to speed up and get up next to the car to let them know the car was on fire.?

RELATED: PA. COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM HELPS SAVE LIFE OF ONE-YEAR-OLD

The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed Willard?s heroic tale, telling the Daily News that the car?s driver, 28-year-old Cheri Hubbard, didn?t catch her rescuerer?s name, let alone know that he was an NFL hopeful.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker was driving from South Carolina to Tennessee for Titans training camp when he saw the smoking Chevrolet SUV on the road late Tuesday afternoon. He told TigerNet.com that he got the driver?s attention by honking his horn at her and after she pulled over, he and another good Samaritan got the woman, three kids and a dog out of the car before it became completely engulfed in flames.

?The driver, she acted like she was in some kind of daze or something. She told me that she didn?t stop because she didn?t think it was her car that was on fire,? Willard told the website.

?I was just glad that we got the kids and all of them out of the car,? he said. ?I was thinking that I was just doing what everybody else would do, but there were cars just going past us and no one else was stopping, so I don?t know if that is what would happen or not.?

ReNewable Now: Background on one of our radio guest last week

Lightning Hybrids is an innovative automotive research and manufacturing company based in Loveland, Colorado. We focus on providing hydraulic solutions ? including fuel efficient?hydraulic hybrid systems for vehicles?(especially fleet work trucks and shuttle buses)?and lightweight composite high pressure?accumulators.

In October of 2008, founders Dan Johnson and Tim Reeser, motivated by a challenge from Dan?s father, Sam Johnson, assembled a team and started work on a?100 MPG hydraulic hybrid sports sedan. ?They entered the $10 million?Automotive X PRIZE?race for ?super fuel-efficient vehicles that people will want to buy? slated for mid-2010. (Click the X PRIZE above to see the outcome of that competition.)

When we returned from the show we found ourselves at a crossroads. The X PRIZE was becoming prohibitively expensive. We knew that if we could get the car to market we could certainly sell a 100 MPG sports sedan, however the cost of getting to market would be well over $12 million because of all the regulations and testing that would have to occur.

Health at diagnosis may drive breast cancer survival gap

By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Differences in the health and tumor characteristics of white and black women with breast cancer at the time of their diagnoses may be largely to blame for the disparity in survival between the two groups, a new study suggests.

Disparities in treatment quality are not the main problem, the researchers conclude, after finding that if differences in the women's overall health and the degree to which the cancer had advanced at the time of diagnosis were eliminated, the survival gap would shrink dramatically.

"The remarkable thing we found is that three-year disparity went down to about one year," said Dr. Jeffrey H. Silber, the study's lead author and the Nancy Abramson Wolfson Endowed Chair in Health Services Research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Currently, the U.S. National Institutes of Health estimates that about 12 percent of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and about 89 percent of them can be expected to be alive five years later.

Previous studies, however, have found large differences in the five-year survival rates of black and white women diagnosed with breast cancer.

In an attempt to find a cause for that gap, Silber and his colleagues used a new statistical model to compare one group of 7,375 black women with breast cancer to three separate groups that each included 7,375 white women with breast cancer.

All the women were in Medicare, the U.S. government-run health insurance for the elderly and disabled, and all were over 65 years old when they were diagnosed between 1991 and 2005.

The researchers found the five-year survival for black women with breast cancer was about 56 percent. That compared to about 69 percent for white women with breast cancer who were matched to the black women by age and year of diagnosis.

That overall difference between racial groups remained virtually unchanged during the 15-year period analyzed.

But when the researchers compared the black women to a group of white women matched for general health and tumor characteristics at time of diagnosis, the survival gap shrank from 12.9 percentage points to 4.4 percentage points.

And within that comparison, when the researchers also matched the women for the treatment they got, the gap further shrank by less than one percentage point.

Based on the findings, Silver told Reuters Health that focusing on ways to improve black women's overall health and the characteristics of their tumors at the time of their diagnoses would do more to reduce the gap in survival rates, compared to improvements in treatment.

"It appears that the presentation is far more important than the disparity in treatment," he said.

Dr. Jeanne Mandelblatt, who co-wrote an editorial accompanying the new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said the report has several limitations that may underestimate the effect of improving treatment in black women.

"What I'm concerned about is that women will take away the message that treatment isn't important, and that's the wrong message," she said.

"The major limitation of this study is that the authors didn't have data on hormonal therapy. So, I think they underestimated the impact of treatment," said Mandelblatt, associate director for population sciences at the Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C.

Silber, however, said that other research has found little difference between Medicare-aged black and white women with breast cancer and whether they receive hormonal therapy.

"We agree with Dr. Mandelblatt that treatment is very important. We would never want to see a disparity in treatment. What we're saying is that you're not going make a major dent in the survival disparity unless you address the presentation disparity," he said.

Silber added that his team is currently digging deeper into the data to find what should be specifically targeted to address the differences in presentation - the health and tumor traits - at the time a woman is diagnosed.

"You have to really solve the presentation problem before you can really get rid of the disparity," he said.

Dr. Leonard Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, also pointed out that these disparities may represent differences in income and education that also impact health.

"Research by the American Cancer Society shows similar disparities come from socioeconomic and education status," Lichtenfeld, who was not involved with the new study, said.

"This research will hopefully once again bring attention to the problem and show people this is real and something needs to be done," he added.

93% The Hunt

All Critics (75) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (70) | Rotten (5)

[A] harrowing but flawed study of an innocent man accused of pedophilia.

It leaves us not only with an unforgettable final image, but also the troubling thought that witch hunts, like war, will always be with us - all the more so in the modern era of instant communication.

It is a devastating film to watch, a heedful one, and a tragic reminder that no matter how well a life has been conducted, the mere whiff of such scandalous behavior is condemnation enough.

[A] quietly devastating drama about a soft-spoken, bespectacled and devoted kindergarten teacher whose life is upended by a false accusation from one of his students.

This is filmmaking of a high order, even though the production's scale is modest and the climax is not without its facile contrivances.

Unsettling, forthright and thought-provoking, The Hunt is also brilliantly titled.

An uncommonly thoughtful, and thought-provoking, entry in the social-issue drama subgenre, anchored by Mikkelsen's gripping performance.

A subtle piece of moral drama crowned by a truly beautiful performance from Mikkelsen, The Hunt puts every one of us in the crosshairs.

Child molestation is indeed horrific. Sometimes, the response to same can be equally disconcerting. The Hunt argues that all too well.

Mads Mikkelsen displays remarkable range as a subdued kindergarten teacher confronting sex-abuse charges in a small Danish town.

Mikkelsen and a terrific ensemble navigate complex emotions and moral quandaries in a terrain where a satisfying resolution is as hard to come by as a child who never tells a lie.

...incredible acting by Mikkelsson, (but) what is unforgettable is the acting of the young girl who makes the allegation, Annika Wedderkopp. It's remarkable that someone so young could give such a performance.

The characters... are not symbolic. They're real people, leading imperfect lives... but we can relate to their feelings, and their actions at every turn of this searing drama.

Vinterberg's best filmmaking since his Dogme '95 entry "The Celebration."

Mikkelsen, one of his country's finest actors, in collaboration with Thomas Vinterberg, one of its finest directors, delivers what may be his strongest performance yet.

A nuanced portrait of a fundamentally decent man grappling with a world that has decided to treat him indecently.

The innocent man wrongly accused is something that everyone can identify with - what if it happened to me?

Mikkelsen's an actor of restraint, and ...Vinterberg's modern day witch hunt tale gives the actor a whole range of restraint to work with in a film whose title begins literally, turns figurative, then, in a chilling coda, suggests a merging of the two.

Here in the UK we have a product called Marmite. It is a deeply divisive food, which you either love or hate. Those who love it, cannot understand how anyone could live without it - and of course, the opposite is true for those who hate it!
This same sentiment could be applied to volume as a trading indicator.
In other words, you are likely to fall into one of two camps. You either believe it works, or you don't. It really is that simple. There is no halfway house here!I make no bones about the fact that I believe I was lucky in starting my own trading journey using volume. To me it just made sense, and the logic of what it revealed was inescapable. And for me, the most powerful reason is very simple. Volume is a rare commodity in trading - a leading indicator. The second, and only other leading indicator, is price. Everything else is lagged. +info.

The Kasparovs tour Africa for chess in education

By Mig Greengard

Kasparov is greeted by the Chairman of the Chess Kenya Githinji Hinga

Apart from promoting chess, Kasparov wanted to hear from local educators and chess people about the challenges they face and what resources they need to meet those challenges in the classroom ? and also in the government and corporate boardrooms. Kasparov said: "It's an awareness-raising trip, both to raise awareness of chess in our destinations and to raise our own awareness about these places and what they need."

KCF Africa, or KCFA, is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and that is where this tour began and ended. The Kasparovs have spent a great deal of time in South Africa in the past few years, building the infrastructure of KCFA and working with partners like the Moves for Life program that has the enthusiastic support of South African President Jacob Zuma, himself a chessplayer.

In case you'd like to reenact this trip yourself with more sightseeing, Google Maps says you can drive this route, round trip to Johannesburg, in just 134 hours. We will happily publish the report of anyone who achieves this.

On July 16, the trip concluded in fine fashion when Kasparov met with the South African Ministery of Sport and Recreation to discuss a program to find and train the most talented kids in the country. "You can't ignore the importance of sporting achievement to promote the game at every level," Kasparov told us. "The successes of national champions inspire kids and parents, bring media coverage and sponsorship, and build national pride in an intellectual pursuit. The model that has worked is to focus on education and the grassroots but not to ignore the top talents and professional infrastructure."

Planning a generation of South African chess champions in Johannesburg: Sport and Recreation Director-General Alec Moemi, Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa President Afrika Msimang, Garry Kasparov.

The rest of the itinerary was full of first-time visits even for the well-traveled Kasparovs. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe: six countries in five days! It was also the first time most of these nations had seen a former world chess champion, and the response was tremendous. The tour was made possible thanks to fortuitous meetings between the Kasparovs, businessman Preston Haskell, whose family has deep ties to South Africa, and entrepreneur Rob Hersov of VistaJet. The Kasparovs pass on their gratitude to them and to all of their hosts along the way. This report is based on notes and comments from Garry and Dasha and local media coverage. The photos are by Dasha Kasparova unless otherwise specified. We've worked hard to get all the names, titles, and places right and please let us know if corrections are required!

July 7-8 ? Nairobi, Kenya

The Kasparovs were met at the airport by Douglas Ratemo, the director of Talent Academy, and were whisked off to address and give out prizes at the Kenya National Youth Chess Championship. Federation President Githinji Hinga played the excellent host and discussed his task of rebuilding a federation that has passed through a long period of neglect.

Kasparov told us afterward, "It's a real shame to see how abandoned the Kenyan federation had been. For all the talk from FIDE about supporting chess in the developing world, it's clear here on the ground that that's all just talk. Githinji is serious about rebuilding and we are just as serious about helping them do it. We are glad to talk, but we aren't here with empty hands! FIDE sends a box of ten chess sets, KCFA is working on ten entire schools!"

KCFA aims to export the successful South Africa model to the rest of the continent. The key to the strategy is to bring the business community, the non-profit world, and the political world together with the chess community, the schools, teachers, and parents. There are also many international companies and non-governmental organizations interested in hitching their names to a success story, especially when they hear about the results in South Africa. Unsurprisingly, the politicians' doors open much more easily when Garry Kasparov comes knocking, and they open all the wider when sponsors are involved from the beginning.

We were excited to find this NTV Kenya video titled "Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov graces local chess tournament" online the first day of his visit. But after watching it through we discovered he doesn't actually appear in it and the entire video is of the junior tournament and kids talking about how excited they are to be meeting him! It's still worth your 90 seconds, especially if you have grown cynical about the power of sports heroes to inspire the next generation, even if those heroes have recently turned 50 years old. The video of Kasparov's actual appearance has not, as far as we can see, been put online yet, unfortunately. Before he got in front of the cameras, Kasparov joked, "Finally, I'm going to appear on NTV!" (The station shares initials with the Kremlin-controlled Russian network that forbids the appearance of opposition members.)

Getting miked up for the interview. "Finally, I'm on NTV!"

The Kasparovs concluded the visit to Nairobi with a meeting with the Kenyan Commissioner of Sport at his office. They were joined by Afrika Msimang, one of the directors of the Moves for Life program and the newly appointed President of Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa.

Then it was time to head west, on to Kampala, Uganda. By the way, joining the Kasparovs on this trip was famous American economist Nouriel Roubini, a friend of Preston Haskell's, who acquired the nickname "Doctor Doom" for his dire predictions ? until many of them came true with the 2008 housing market collapse and ensuing global financial crisis. This made for conversation that provided a little break from discussing the problems of the chess world! Roubini was meeting with various finance ministers and central bankers on the way, although he also attended a chess event or two!

Economist Nouriel Roubini tweeted this photo from the Nairobi airport

Kasparov's recent appearance in New York City with Moves for Life co-founder Marisa van der Merwe and young Ugandan chess star Phiona Mutesi was covered here, and this entire trip was a logical follow-up move to Kasparov's powerful exhortation in NYC about the importance of education. Ironically, as Kasparov became the first world champion to visit Uganda, Mutesi was playing in an event in South Africa! The Ugandan media was out in force, with dozens of reports from at least ten different sites covering Kasparovs' every move from the airport to their meetings with federation president Luggya M. Vianney and his entire executive group (including detailing the loss of two of the group's suitcases at the Nairobi airport, that were eventually recovered).

Making friends in Uganda

If the Kasparovs and chess federation president Kevin Ganza have their way, Rwanda could make news for its chess success. They met with Sports and Culture Minister Protais Mitali and Education Minister Mathias Harebamungu to discuss the benefits of chess in its famous definition as a sport, an art, and a science. There is now a preponderance of evidence that chess is a universal positive for kids in school, with improvements in everything from attendance and participation to test scores in math and even seemingly surprising subjects like reading. But it makes sense when you see that more than anything, chess is fun! The kids love it and don't want to miss it, so attendance rises as soon as chess is introduced into the curriculum. Then they want to get better, and the improved concentration skills help in every subject. When you add the fact that chess bridges every social gap of age, gender, economics, and language, it's really a can't-miss proposition.

Meeting with the Minister of State in Charge of Education Mathias Harebamungu

The Malawi chess federation may not boast many players, but that doesn't reflect the level of enthusiasm for the game and for Kasparov's visit to Lilongwe. It's worth pointing out that although chess is a cheap game to play, it's not free to host FIDE-rated events. There are fees associated with having arbiters, organizers, ratings and titles to run events, and they are often prohibitive to small federations. Kasparov blasted this state of affairs, saying, "if we as a chess community are going to take our global responsibility to the game seriously, we need to do everything we can to promote its growth where there is the most potential. For the most part that means Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America, especially in the areas we call the developing world. Hitting these struggling little federations with FIDE fees is anti-growth and anti-chess."

From two of the smallest countries in Africa they were off to one of the largest nations in the world, the Democratic Republic of Congo. (Not to be confused with the neighboring Republic of Congo. Or with its own previous incarnations as Belgian Congo, the Republic of Congo, and Zaire.) It's the 11th largest country in the world and second only to Algeria in Africa. The Kasparovs headed to the southern tip of the country, to the second-largest city in the DRC after the capital of Kinshasa, Lubumbashi. The group was invited to dinner by the Governor of Katanga Province, Moise Katumbi Chapwe. "A very impressive figure," was Kasparov's evaluation. "I'm always happy to meet people who are more interested in doing than in talking, and Governor Chapwe is such man." Then they met with the Minister of Education, Laurent Kahozi Sumba for a presentation of the KCFA program.

Harare, Zimbabwe, is full of contradictions that are typical in many African nations. The government is divided and private businesses and public institutions are often split as well. Everyone just tries to keep moving forward, and that includes the chess community and federation president Charles Kuwaza. The Kasparovs also met with Harpal S. Randhawa of GEMS Education, which has a global network. They has already announced that the KCFA programs will be implemented in the Rio Zim Foundation's schools in Zimbabwe.

A happy send-off from Zimbabwe federation president Charles Kuzawa ended the journey

KCFA programs Malawi and Rwanda are also already moving forward, and confirmation is forthcoming from Kenya and Uganda. There is little doubt that the chess landscape in these countries is changing forever as of this month. It won't be every day that Garry Kasparov comes to visit, but the entire global chess community must come together with these far-flung communities of our chess peers. If the bonds are strong, they will no longer be at risk of falling through the cracks. Kasparov said, "these small federations get a few little gifts from Ilyumzhinov every four years and then are safely ignored. It's entirely backwards at the moment. FIDE shouldn't be living off the taxes of these federations, it should be the other way around, with FIDE having enough sponsors to give them the support they need. Real support, real chess brotherhood, also means being available and listening and responding, not disappearing and taking all your big promises with you when you go. KCFA is *here*, and we aren't leaving!"

South African Minister of Sport and Recreation Mbalula and Kasparov.
South African social networks were abuzz about the meeting.

We hope to hear from our African readers about this visit and also about what can be done to promote chess in Africa in the future. Keeping lines of communication open is the first step toward building a global chess community we can all be proud of.
