Roses, orphanages, dinner parties: Patiala, Punjab | california girl at ...

Our itinerary said today was a rest day ? it ended up being entirely different. (No complaints here.)

We?ve been in our homestays now for a full day. What stands out the most is that nuclear families aren?t so typical in this part of India. Sarah and I are in a beautiful, marble-floored home?where a?husband and wife, their two adult sons, their wives, and their children all live together. The daughters-in-law, Sima and Gudoo, are doing the heavy lifting of the hospitality. Every fourth minute they ask if we want tea, something to eat, a fresh towel, another pillow. I swear they?d give me a baby unicorn if they had one. Maybe I should ask.

After an eggs and toast breakfast and a shower that involved a bucket and measuring cup, our driver arrived to take Sarah and me to meet the rest of our group for our first full day in Punjab. First stop: a college in Patiala, one of the cities in Punjab.

IMG_8538

Stage and plaza of the college.

Kate, our resident academic, was the reason for the visit to the school. She works as an archivist at Oklahoma State. The school?s president, a Rotarian, greeted us with bouquets of flowers and ushered us in for tea. Their 3,000 students are pursuing various degrees, from C++ to biochemistry and art.

IMG_8537

In light of the international-headline-getting gang rape in Delhi, this caught my eye. Interesting addition to a college campus:
?From woman man is born. Within woman man is conceived. To woman he is engaged and married. Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come. When woman dies, he seeks another woman; through woman he is related to others. So why call her bad who gives birth even to kings and emperors??

Faculty members took us to a nearby restaurant for lunch. I absolutely owe you all a post on food (and only food), but let me just tell you that the lemon coriander soup I had at lunch today might?ve changed my life. We were told before we left that ice cream in India was exquisite. It was dessert, and ? eh.

After lunch we visited SOS Children?s Home, an orphanage in Punjab. I was fighting back tears yesterday just being told that we?d be visiting it ? so you don?t have to work too hard to imagine what I was like this afternoon. Their concept of an orphanage, though, is beautiful.

The property has 14 individual homes ? bedrooms, kitchens, family areas, and most importantly, a ?mother.? She?s usually a woman who never had children of her own or whose children are grown and gone ? though whatever the reason, she has devoted her life to service to orphans. Children who are abandoned, whose parents have died, or who are simply found orphaned can be brought to SOS and placed in a ?family.?

IMG_8548

Sweet boy, and his ?mother? in the background.

Each mother typically cares for 8-10 children at a time, from the day they arrive (what SOS dubs their birthday), until they are old enough to go to college. The children in the home we visited ranged from 8 years old to 20 years old, the oldest two (18 and 20) each with plans to go to college, and all with a mastering of English.

As we left the house, a group of girls on the lawn stopped us, and for 5 perfect minutes sang a traditional Punjabi song. The music, the cool air, the smiles on their faces ? everything about the moment was perfect. And I only had to use one Kleenex. (Kind of a miracle, actually.)

IMG_8542

A few of the music-makers.

The day was capped with an enormous dinner party at the home of one of the host Rotarians. There was dancing, games, more flowers, door prizes, and entirely too much food and drink. I?m not sure when the last time I played musical chairs was (my 8th birthday party, I?m guessing?), but I came real close being the Punjab Musical Chairs Champion. I thought it would be in poor form to shove one of my hosts to get to a chair ? but I?ll admit that I REALLY wanted to. If you?re wondering how good I am at Punjabi dancing, the answer is not very, but if you?ve seen me regular-dance you wouldn?t be at all surprised.

By the numbers:

  • Showers taken with a bucket: 1
  • Visits to a Turkish toilet: 1
  • Pashminas gifted to me: 2
  • Shawls gifted to me: 1
  • Flower tally: 1 bouquet of roses, 6 marigold necklaces. (They?re like leis, really, but this isn?t Hawaii. I should find out the Punjabi word for them.)
  • Passports stolen: 1 (No, not mine. Kate?s purse went missing last night, complete with her passport, phone, and wallet. She?ll be visiting the embassy in Delhi to get it all sorted out. Better now than the day before we leave, I say. And another reason why my passport will stay on my body at all times.)

We have instructions to be ready at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, but for what I?m not exactly sure. I do know that we?re going to a wedding tomorrow night. I guess it?s good that I have the whole day to work on my dancing?

Krakowski: 'I cried so much' over '30 Rock's' end

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The cast of "30 Rock" knew the end was nigh as they filmed the show's final season, but that didn't make shooting the series finale any easier.

"It was a very tearful goodbye," Jane Krakowski, who played Jenna Maroney on the long-running series, revealed during a Thursday morning visit to TODAY. "It sort of didn't set in as a reality until we got to the final episode. Then there were so many tears from the read-through on. I cried so much I became known as the John Boehner of '30 Rock.' I could not stop crying."

The tears are bound to flow again as Krakowski joins her "30 Rock" pals one more time Thursday night.

"Tonight ? for the series finale, we're all going to get together and watch it together," she said.

In addition to their own farewell performances, they'll watch a guest appearance from TODAY's own Savannah Guthrie in the series sendoff. According to the always-diplomatic Krakowski, she was "wonderful" in the episode, but it's tough to pick a favorite among the many TODAY-anchor cameos over the years. "I've had a few magical moments with Matt (Lauer on the show) as well," she admitted.

The series finale of "30 Rock" airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Encourages sales by presenting products in a positive way. Tell people about the benefits that they will receive and the goals that they can reach by purchasing what you have to sell. If you exude confidence in your customers, they will pick up on that.

Create an FAQ page to help out your Internet marketing endeavors. Offer an answer to each question, and mention products you offer as a solution to the problem when it is appropriate. Also, use questions that allow you to mention products that you sell.

TIP! You should spend time researching the design basics of website building before starting your own site. There are plenty of guides online that will teach you almost everything you need to know about HTML and CSS to get your web design training off on the right foot.

It is in your best interest to constantly monitor your content and make sure your customers are getting the information you want. Have someone else look over your content, too. A brand new outlook on things is very useful! Last of all, you must ensure that you do a spell check and a grammar check of your content in order to catch and correct any errors.

Try to understand your competitors. There?s nothing stopping you from loading up the websites of your competitors and checking out how they operate. You can estimate the number of visitors they get and that can tell you how yours is doing in comparison.

Doing so can help you find the perfect niche and even let you come up with a great mission statement.

Try offering to put a portion of every purchase toward a relevant charity if that is something that will appeal to your audience. Advertise this very clearly, but not excessively. The percentage of your profits doesn?t need to be huge to help your marketing.

TIP! To attract the right people to your site, know who you are aiming to reach out to, and what you will need to do that. Once you are familiar with your audience, it will be easier for you to create and manage content that will keep them coming back.

Place keywords in your internal links. Keep visitors on your site by linking to other related content on your site. Internal links are a free way to advertise to current customers and to help get you more hits from other advertising avenues.

Competition is a key to being successful at Internet promotion. Research what your competition is doing and the things that are helping them as well as hurting them. There is a lot that you can get from watching others. Checking out competitors can help you avoid mistakes they?ve made and set yourself apart from them.

TIP! You are always going to need some sort of tag line and logo, no matter the size of your company. You customers will remember you by how you portray your brand.

To make a great impression for first-time customers, think about offering a $1 sale or other promotion just for new clients. Economic jitters compete with Obama agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just as President Barack Obama is pushing new initiatives on gun control and immigration, the gloomy old problem of a sluggish economy is elbowing its way back into prominence. Consumer confidence is falling, the economy is contracting and large automatic spending cuts are threatening to hit the Pentagon and other programs, with uncertain consequences.

These troubles arise as Obama's public approval is improving and as he begins to use his sway to promote the key features of his second-term agenda. The White House, the Federal Reserve and independent economists attributed the shrinkage in gross domestic product and the drop in consumer confidence to one-time events and said underlying economic factors were still showing encouraging signs.

But in politics, power resides in the moment. Any immediate economic setback ? or the perception of one ? could weaken Obama's clout or at least distract him as he carefully tries to put his imprint on initiatives dealing with immigration and gun violence.

At the White House, there was no evidence of a course alteration. And White House officials expressed confidence in consumption and investment trends that showed evidence of strength.

But the Commerce Department announcement Wednesday that the economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.1 percent came a day after the Conference Board reported a sharp decline in consumer confidence in January. That drop, together with one in December, erased consumer confidence that had built up in 2012.

What's more, the new data comes just two days before the government releases the January unemployment report, which economists believe will stay at the still-high rate of 7.8 percent, where it has held for two months.

"What's most critical to consumer confidence is employment," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board. "We've had spurts where we've had strong job growth and we've seen a rebound in confidence, and then suddenly you have a pullback in employment and you get a pullback in confidence. So we need a convincing story, and that's going to take several months of jobs growth."

Analysts said the economy is still on track to grow steadily if modestly at a roughly 2 percent pace, as long as the housing and auto industries continue to recover.

The Commerce Department attributed the economic contraction mainly to companies restocking at a slower rate and to reductions in government spending on defense. While companies will ultimately have to rebuild their inventories, the cuts in defense spending could offer a hint of things to come.

The administration argued that the 22 percent reduction in defense spending was partly in anticipation of automatic spending cuts that were going to take effect at the beginning of the year. Obama and congressional Republicans averted that so-called fiscal cliff by extending Bush-era tax rates to all but the wealthiest Americans.

But the deal simply delayed the automatic cuts until March 1. At that point, the Pentagon faces across-the-board cuts of 7 percent, while domestic programs will have to shrink by 5 percent. Some analysts believe that if those cuts are allowed to occur, as some Republicans are now suggesting, the economy could lose a half a percentage point of growth.

"If the economy would continue to slow down, the interesting question is how does that affect negotiations in and around sequester, government spending, tax reform, the debt ceiling," said John Sides, a political scientist at George Washington University who studies the impact of economic data on politics. "To me it's not so much that an economic slowdown is going to hurt the president's ability to get things done, it's how it's going to affect the negotiations that we already know are going to happen."

Some in the business community hope the experience in the last quarter will alert lawmakers to the potential economic damage the automatic cuts could create.

"I don't think any time you see a reduction in economic growth that it's good news," White House press secretary Jay Carney conceded Wednesday.

But he cautioned, "We need to make sure that in Washington we are not taking actions that undercut that progress that we have been making and can continue to make and will continue to make."

Carney said letting the automatic cuts take effect is a "sort of political brinksmanship of the kind that results in one primary victim, and that's American taxpayers, the American middle class."

Still, the White House insists the only alternative to those cuts is a mix of savings and new tax revenue. Republicans say the $600 billion in revenue they already gave Obama as part of the New Year's fiscal cliff deal is enough. They insist that if he wants different spending cuts than those due to start on March 1, he should submit a new plan.

But the White House has been eager to move away from fiscal and budget fights, ready to use the president's re-election and the uptick in his popularity to push his noneconomic agenda.

On Tuesday, he traveled to Las Vegas to push for an overhaul in immigration. On Monday, he is traveling to Minneapolis to promote his proposals to reduce gun violence.

The issues are not simple ones for Obama. The economy and the nation's debt still rank higher than immigration and guns as issues in the mind of the public. Moreover, Obama has to navigate gingerly with Congress on immigration, where a fragile coalition of Democrats and Republicans is assembling legislation that, among other things, could provide a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Obama has vowed to use his bully pulpit to build public support for his new agenda. Defending his economic stewardship was not supposed to be part of the playbook.

How to Steer Clear of Excessive Auto Loan Debt

auto loan debt

Aside from a mortgage (which thankfully, I don?t have yet) and student loans, the next big debt that a large number of adults take on is a new car. With more Americans finding it difficult to save up enough money just to cover a few months of expenses, most car buyers choose to take on auto loan debt as the default solution, without even considering (or more likely, keeping a blind-eye to) other options.

Point in case: Me.

My Auto Loan Nightmare

My first experience as a car buyer was actually pretty disciplined from a financial standpoint. Finding a car that matched my personality was just as important to me as reliability, longevity and price; after a few months of research, I knew exactly what I was looking for:

  • Mazda Miata (any model year)
  • Odometer at under 80,000 miles
  • Overall good body condition
  • Mechanically sound

The maximum I could afford spend on the purchase was $4,500 ? not much, but enough to get me around to interviews after I graduated from college. I found a 1996 Mazda Miata M-Edition with 75,000 miles in excellent condition on AutoTrader.com, priced at $5,000. At the time, it was a steal since other sellers priced comparable models in similar condition closer to $7,500. After a couple test drives, a review of past service records and short negotiation, I was able to draw the seller down to fit my budget and all was well.

That is, until three years later when the transmission wouldn?t shift into the proper gear, the speedometer and odometer gave out and every drive on the freeway had me scared for my safety ? worried I?d be stranded in the middle of Downtown L.A. traffic. Instead of taking a financially sound approach to it all (i.e. having my car repaired or selling it and buying another used car), I decided to use my paltry $1,000 savings fund as a down payment on a brand new $23,000 car.

Genius.

Now, I?m stuck with an auto loan of over $20,000 with a monthly payment of $399 for the next five years. Despite the fact that I?ve witnessed my friends agonize over their auto loan payments and complain they?re always broke, I didn?t think twice about taking on the massive auto loan debt once I?d already had my eyes set on a car.

I may not have heeded the advice of my peers, but you may still have the chance to avoid the financial burden of an expensive auto loan.

How to Budget for Your Next Car

When I decided to finance a new car, I made the fatal error of only looking at my monthly income and estimated payment. I crunched the numbers and somehow reasoned that I could afford to pay up to $500 per month on a car loan.

At no point in the process did I stop to consider, ?Yeah, I could? but should I??

Dave Ramsey argues that the total value of your vehicles (including cars, motorcycles, boats, etc.) should not equal more than half of your gross annual income.

?You are not wealthier by having a nice car and a big loan. If anything, you are poorer,? proclaims Ramsey.

Furthermore, Ramsey recommends that drivers purchase a beater car for a small cost of $2,000 cash, with the expectation of driving it for 10 months. The money that would have gone to an auto loan (in my case, $400 per month) can then be set aside for your next car purchase, which after 10 months, will be $4,000. On the other hand, if the $2,000 car is still running strong, continue saving to be able to buy your next upgraded vehicle in cash.

Ultimately, Ramsey poses the question to his followers: ?What could you do with that [$400] if you weren?t paying for the car every month?? His answer ? ?anything you wanted!?
